Report from the Kids' Expo

Participating in the first Kids' Expo was a wonderful experience for the BYC volunteers who set up and manned the YSP Booth for 8 hours. The event turn-out was a little sparse, but probably not surprising in view of the fact that this was the first time the Expo took place. The event organiser promised us that the name would be changed next year to "Youth Expo". Our hope is that this would lead to a greater attendance of children in our age group (10-15).

"The booth looked great. It was a 10 X 10 cubicle with a high curtain in back and two low curtains on the side. We had a corner lot so we were able to orient the DeWitt Dinghy along the inside curtain, with our banner (a half-scale version of what is at West Marine) high in the back and a table along the outer low curtain with the lap tops and the knot board as well as the flyers, registration forms and raffle tickets. As one can see, we took full advantage of the excellent location we were given. It's good to sign up early...."

Interested visitors to our booth were encouraged to fill out free raffle tickets. We received a total of 33 returned tickets during the EXPO. A drawing was held in the Clubhouse. V/C Morse drew the winning ticket in front of several witnesses including an official witness. THE WINNER IS GARRETT JORDAN OF SILVERDALE.

YSP Director wishes to express his appreciation to all the committee members and volunteers (including former students) who pitched in and made this event a success for us: The preparation of a movie and a slide show (that ran simultaneously on two lap tops throughout the event); Printing out photos for display; Setting up the booth (including the DeWitt sailing dinghy); manning the booth all day (including mixing with the crowds and directing potential sailors to our booth). "These things don't just happen and I'm very grateful to the superb support this program is receiving from club members".

P.S. "I received a call this morning from the grandmother of one of the people that visited the booth Saturday. She is registering her grandson for one of the classes." (M.K., 25 April 2006)
