This month marks one year since the United States of America was attacked by a bunch of terrorists bent on breaking this great nation. While they created much destruction, disruption and caused many deaths, they did not succeed in their mission. Our nation is stronger than ever and the resolve of it’s citizens is more entrenched. We must never forget what happened on September 11,2001 and each and everyone of us should take time on that fateful day to pay our respects for those who lost their lives and for those who lost loved ones that shall never return. We should also express our appreciation to the men and women serving in our armed forces. They are out there serving our nation and us. Take the time to remember. It is important.

As the summer is drawing to a close and the kids return to school the boats are returning from their journeys north. I am sure we will hear many “seastories” about their adventures and how they had generator problems, engine problems and a whole host of other “minor incidents.” I am sure they all had a great time despite their problems. The weather has been gorgeous for boating this summer. Not good for gardeners, but great for boaters.

Lynne & I had the opportunity to take some friends from South Carolina down to southsound for three nights. They were impressed with Oro Bay and Olympia and could not believe the weather we have and enjoyed catching and picking a few crabs. South Carolina is having temps in the high 90s and humidity to match. Boy, are we fortunate!

Did you notice the advertisements in last months Towline? Thanks to our Publicity and Advertising Chairman, Charlie Billings, we are taking in some money to offset the costs of publishing the Towline and the annual. Please support our advertisers and let them know you saw their ad in the Towline.

Our Fleet Captain, Mike Thomas, has set up a Slough Cruise with the Everett Yacht Club for 14 September. From reports of previous cruises, it should be a great time. We need your help to make it a real success. It seems that Everett is limited in the number of boats they can supply and have asked that we provide some boats to make the journey up the slough. If you can take your boat and are willing to carry some of our members up the slough, please call Mike Thomas. He would really appreciate your help.

As I mentioned at Installation in May, we are planning to have some buffet dinners before the general membership meeting once a month. The first will be on Monday, 7 October at 1830. I hope to have Bremerton’s Mayor, Cary Bozeman attend and brief us on his programs and plans for the future of Bremerton. The regular meeting will be held at 1930 after the dinner. Spouses are welcome to attend, as is the case at any of our meetings.

Have you ever noticed it always takes longer than you had planned to complete a project? I recently purchased a fish finder and decided to install it on our boat before leaving on vacation. Installing the fish finder would have been fairly simple but I chose to also upgrade both lower and upper helm instrumentation's. Of course I waited until 2 weeks before our vacation was to begin. After much trouble shooting, tracing a wiring nightmare, and help from fellow club members things are beginning to progress towards an end. Maybe, just maybe Gerri and I will get to go, if not for the full 2 ½ weeks maybe 12 days. (Hopefully by the time you read this we will have gone and come back.)

I am sure if any of you have been down at the club and looked into the progress of the galley you might do a replay of my fish finder story. It seems when ever we make a little progress we end up waiting for a part or a contractor to complete a need assignment. The bottom line is, there is progress, even if it seems slow. If all goes as planned we will soon have the new ventilation hood in place and work can continue on placing the stoves, the counters and cabinets. If you would like to get your time in early (say this September) talk to Work Party Chair, Capt. Don Sherwood. He has a list of jobs that need to be completed. Some are big enough that two people can work together while many are a one man one shot item.

A big Thank You goes to those Chairman who volunteered to put on a Picnic In The Park. In June Captain Bill Baker fed a large crowd of 100+ a great down home "Old Fashioned Picnic" and Captain Al Gonzalez clocked in over 120 for his famous marinated Tri-tips. It was a great Western Ho Down complete with a few horses in tow. I want to thank Captain Dave Cleator for putting on the August Country Picnic. It is always refreshing to see members step up and volunteer to chair an event. That is one of the truly nice things about being a self help club, willing volunteers. Weather you are a new member or a seasoned one I can always use volunteers as I am sure all the Chairmen can. At present I am looking for a chair for the September Breakfast, any takers, remember you get ½ point, fed free, meet old and new members, and have fun doing it. Admittedly, ½ point doesn't sound like much, but when you're new they
add up surprisingly fast. Give me a call. I have a bag full of points that I'd love to give away to help you get
that improved moorage or best of all, that boat shed.

Captain Buddy Lilly has ordered the salmon and Captain Bob Stanberry has been readying the place for a great Salmon Bake on Sunday September 8th. As usual, included with the salmon will be freshly picked and husked corn on the cob, garlic bread, and cole slaw. Social time 2 pm and dinner at 3 pm. Remember to sign up in the club house soon to ensure we have enough for everyone.

Hope to see you in the Islands. Hope to see me in the Islands.

Wow, I can't believe its September already.  Where did summer go?

The Galley remodel is moving along very well.  We should see the exhaust and supply fan and range hood installed by the time you read this article.  The next step will be cabinet installation.   Anyone wanting to get in your work party time early, please come and join us. Don Sherwood is the work party chairman, contact him for an assigned task.  Some of the jobs needing to be done are mudding, taping, painting, etc.  Don will let you know what is left to do.  Any help you can provide will help us  finish the Galley in short  time.

New carpet has been installed in the lounge and hallway.   This has really brightened up the area making it look really great, I am sure you all will agree.

ATTENTION!!  When you see orange cones in the parking lot blocking out parking spaces in the north parking lot, they are there for a very important purpose.  The space being blocked out is to clear space for the fuel delivery truck.  DO NOT MOVE THE CONES SO YOU CAN PARK THERE.   The driver of the truck has a very difficult time delivering fuel to the club without having these spaces cleared when he arrives.  The cones will only be there for the time it takes for the truck to come to deliver usually a day or two maximum. Your consideration during this time is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Rod Perryman
Rear Commodore

Skipperettes will hold it's first meeting of the fall September 11 at 11:30 am. We will have a "Brown Bag Picnic in the Park". Meetings rotate monthly between a luncheon at noon and dessert meetings at 6:30 pm. Guest are always welcome to attend.

The first outing for the year will be Tuesday, September 17. We are planning a day trip to the Oro Bay Outstation. We will leave the club house at 9 am to catch the ferry from Steilacoom, returning around 4 pm. First stop a visit to the outstation, then a private shopping spree at the Museum gift shop, followed by lunch at the Lake Shore Restaurant. A sign up sheet is on the bulletin board or call Gerri Bachman (692-5004) for more information.

Youth Sailing Program graduates 11 kids!
Thanks for all the help with our inaugural two-week Youth Sailing Program!!!  A lot of people (including a number of POWER-boaters) put in a lot of work to make this happen.  BYC should be very proud!

We hope to continue this next year with a four-week program, but we will need a successful fund-raising effort (roughly $20,000) to purchase the boats and build floats for a more permanent facility.  I'd like to remind everyone that Skip Peters of Poulsbo Yacht Club loaned the boats we used this year to BYC, at zero cost to us.  We hope to use the boats year-round for day sailing, advanced courses (afternoon sessions), and an adult class.  We may even partner with one of the local high schools for a joint program.  Please contact Capt Joe Payne with any ideas or contacts related to this effort, or to volunteer for next year's program!  We will need a lot more people (three per day, every day for four weeks!).  I do not want to make light of the substantial volunteer effort involved.

Racing Sheet
Our Fall Series Regatta starts 22 September, with our second day of races on 28 September.  We will try to get in two races per day during the Fall series, and the schedule is a little flexible at this point.  Please contact the Sail Regatta Chair ASAP if you'd like to participate, so that I can get your preferences for a schedule.
Also, don't forget the "Six-Pack" races at Port Orchard Marina every Friday night at 1800 (6:00 pm).  West Sound Corinthian Yacht Club sponsors the September races.
Also in September, the Mosquito Fleet Regatta, sponsored by Sinclair Inlet Yacht Club, is set for 14 September.  See the clubhouse board for more info.

Local log racing has taken it's normal summer break, with the next IPBA north sound race in September, at Seattle Yacht Clubs Port Madison outstation. This race is always a good one, and is one big super social event. There is one race this summer, the IPBA International Cruiser Race (ICR), and is a must race for anyone chasing the IPBA points.

The ICR will be in Canada this year, to be held on August 3rd and be run out of Thetis Island, British Columbia. The points received are 2.25 times the normal points for this one race. This year the normal entry fee is being waived, in hopes that more skippers will enter. This race is always a lot of fun, and the Canadians always have lots of fun. Many of those racing will be staying up in the BC area to do some cruising or attending the North American Invitational (NAI) National Championship log race which is the next weekend in Vancouver. Several BYC skippers have volunteered the use of their boats for the NAI  championship race.

The ICR race log was sent out with the IPBA news letter, the Unpredictable Log. If you did not get a copy, copies are available at the BYC clubhouse.

Annual Needs Your Submissions;
Its the summer season, and that means that once again the annual committee is collecting information for another BYC annual. We hope to have the annual ready for publishing by September, so the sooner we can make all our changes and updates, the better.

What does this mean for you?  If you have any information to submit to the annual, please do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the last minute.  This especially includes contact information, address changes, phone number changes, and your email address. (we added 40 email addresses last year, but with close to 300 members, we are still missing many addresses). We also still have missing pictures, either of people or of boats.  Flag officers and Skipperette officers, we'll also need you formal pictures.

Plus if you have anything noteworthy or informative that should be in the annual.

Submissions should be placed in the annual box in the clubhouse or e-mailed to bycannual@bremertonyachtclub.org. You can also also contact the annual chair Bret Halffman at: modernd@hotmail.com  or the web coordinator daveu@sptddog.com

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.

Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how to setup and modify web pages, contact webteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic storage of the club history.

If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way to earn points.  A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...

Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments, and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and relevant to members of the community.

Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact daveu@sptddog.com to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email addresses for next years annual.
