We will be trying something a little different for the next general membership meeting.  We will be having a buffet dinner before the meeting with a guest speaker. The dinner will start at 1830 (6:30PM) followed by the regular meeting at 1930. Our stewards, Captains Al Gonzalez and Mike Dunn, are planning a nice buffet dinner and our Bremerton Mayor, Cary Bozeman, will be discussing some of his plans for the City of Bremerton. Should be interesting presentation as there are lots of things beginning to happen in town. Spouses are welcome to attend. At the first meeting in November (Nov 4) the CO of SUBASE Bangor, Captain Duane Baker, will be with us for the dinner meeting.

Our first meeting of the new season was on 16 September and from the attendance it looked like it should be an interesting year ahead. Our Membership Chairman, Captain Chuck Silvernail, has been very busy this summer recruiting new members that are the lifeblood of an organization such as ours. We obligated one new member at the August E-Committee meeting and FOUR new members at the 16 September meeting! He has several more that have filled out applications and a couple that are looking for sponsors. Thank you Chuck for all your efforts and to you sponsors that are helping Chuck in the recruiting.

Workparty Chairman, Captain Don Sherwood, is gearing up for the first workparty on 12 & 13 October. He has a lot of work on the backlog and much needs to be done before snow flies to get the clubhouse, floats and grounds shipshape (not to mention finishing the galley). Don mentioned at the 16 September meeting that consideration is being given to increasing the workparty hours for this year from 8 to 16 hours to help reduce our work backlog. This will probably be a topic of discussion at the 7 October meeting.

Those of you who were not able to make the Slough Cruise sponsored by the Everett Yacht Club on 14 September missed a great time. We had only four couples attending, but it was an exciting cruise up the slough for nearly four hours, followed by a hamburger luncheon at their club. EYC had 17 boats on the cruise and a few water fights broke out between boats along the way. Sorry you missed it.

The club's social season is kicking in to high gear and Vice Commodore Bachman and Gerri have a bunch of interesting events planned. Be sure and watch the club calendar and get these "happenings" on your schedule.

As summer cruising activities wind down the Fall social schedule is just gearing up. In August, Capt. Dave Cleator and First Mate Janet and crew put on our last Picnic in the Park. They had a great turnout for their Old Fashioned Picnic. Good job, Dave and crew. This year our P in P's have seen tremendous response and it's easy to see why - they're a lot of fun and the food is good. Next and last social in August was the Labor Day cruise-in to Oro Bay. Fleet Captain Mike Thomas and First Mate Kathy did another outstanding job and the Anderson Is. Parade was a blast as usual. Thanks guys, for all the hard work.

September kicked off with another hugely successful Salmon Bake. Capt. Bob Stanberry and Stephanie, after many years working on the committee, took on the chairmanship this year with Capt. Bud Lilly and Mate Mary. This is one of those events everyone looks forward to and Bob, Bud, mates and crew - WELL DONE!! Finishing out September will be the first Sunday Breakfast of the season on the 29th. Capt. Steve Stearns and Mate Laurie will be looking for you there.

October 11 is Octoberfest. Herr P/C Bob Wheeler and Mate Frau Jytte are planning a fun evening. At this social will be the added attraction/entertainment of the installation of Ex Commodore Conrad to the prestigious P/C Club assuming he passes the rigorous tests. Next is the Cruise to Silverdale on the 18th, 19th and 20th and on the 20th plan for an early departure back to the club for the October Sunday Breakfast at 9:00 A.M.

Looking ahead to November is the Junior Officers Ball on the 16th. This is a bi-annual event for our club in which all the Junior Officers of the Grand 14 come here for the weekend. The ball is not a closed event but is open to the membership to come and enjoy a delicious sit down dinner followed by an evening of dancing. It is a theme event with this year's theme being "The Great Gatsby" which means the attire for the night is all white formal to casual, your choice. A lot of fun. Put it on your calendar.

Also, to make planning and purchasing easier and more predictable for our Fleet Captain and event chairmen, for no shows in the future unless your name has been scratched before the sign up list is pulled, a reservation made will be a reservation paid.

 Lastly, by the time you read this, the galley (here I go sticking my neck out again) should be 90% complete, with about TWO MORE WEEKS to finish the details. Stop by, take a look, its everything we promised plus. And it should outlast our youngest member.

So, as you put away your boat shoes, break out your social shoes for the busy Fall season ahead.

We're getting into the fall cruising season now and I hope you all have had as much fun as Angela and I have on club cruises and your own private get aways.

I'm reminded of how many times I have ventured to the ice freezer only to find it nearly or completely empty of ice. Fellow members, there is no good reason for this.   If we would all follow the common courtesy of taking one bag of ice and replacing it with two the freezer would always be full.  Please remind a fellow member of this courtesy if needed, and we can all enjoy our next trip for ice.

CARDBOARD: If you have cardboard to dispose of, please flatten it and put it in the dumpster., and of course do not bring trash from home.  Only trash from your boat  is allowed in the dumpster. We do not have a cardboard recycle area.

Oil spill pads located in the Emergency Spill Kits around the club are for emergencies only and are not to be removed from the spill kits for personal use. If you need oil pads please purchase your own.  Federal Law mandates the ready availability of these materials for emergencies, please help protect your club.

We now have new carpeting in the clubhouse. Please remember to check your shoes before entering the clubhouse and make sure they are clean.

Fall work party is scheduled for Oct 12 & 13.   If you can attend please sign - up as soon as possible so the work party chairman can estimate what projects can be worked and also have the appropriate materials on hand. So if you can attend please sign-up on the work party list located on the bulletin board to the left of the club store.

Angela and I hope to see you out there on the water this fall cruising season.

Thank you,

Rod Perryman
Rear Commodore

TRIBUTE

As I was writing my October column I seemed to be constantly thinking of that most horrible day of one year ago - September 11. Since so many of us in this club have a military connection in their background I decided to do a little research on that most fitting tribute to our fallen heroes of that most haunting and eloquent melody, TAPS. I know of no piece of music that will almost consistently bring tears to flow or make battle hardened men choke up than TAPS. Here is the results of my research.

Of all the military bugle calls, none is so easily recognized or more apt to render emotion than "Taps". The use of "Taps" is unique to the United States military, as the call is sounded at funerals, wreath-laying and memorial services. Up until the Civil War, the infantry call for "Lights Out" was the one set down in Silas Casey's "Tactics", which had been borrowed from the French. The call we know today as "Taps", existed in an early version of the call "Tattoo", which had gone out of use by the Civil War. The origin of the word "Taps" is thought to have come from the Dutch word for "Tattoo", "Taptoe". More than likely, "Taps" comes from the three drum taps that were played as a signal for "Extinguish Lights" when a bugle was not used. The music for "Taps" was changed by Union Army General Daniel Butterfield for his brigade ( Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac) in July, 1862. Gen. Butterfield was not pleased with the call for "Lights Out", feeling that it was too formal to signal the day's end. He felt the day's final call should bring comfort and peace to tired and troubled men. With the help of the brigade bugler, Oliver Wilcox Norton, Butterfield created "Taps" to honor his men while in camp at Harrison's Landing, Virginia, following the Seven Days? battle. These battles took place during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. The call, sounded that night in July, 1862, soon spread to other units of the Union Army and was even used by the Confederates. "Taps" was made an official bugle call after the war. There is something singularly beautiful and appropriate in the 24 musical notes of this wonderful call. Its strains are melancholy, yet full of rest and peace. Its echoes linger in the heart long after its tones have died away.

This research is taken from the Taps Exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery, by Msgt Jari Villanueva, an Air Force bugler at Arlington who has sounded the call more than 1500 times over the last 15 years. He is the Curator of the exhibit, a Civil War reenactor and historian.

While there are no official words to the bugle call itself, the commonly used lyrics are derived from the following verses;

Fading light dims the sight,

And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.

From afar drawing nigh - Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,

From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;

All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Then good night, peaceful night,

Till the light of the dawn shineth bright;

God is near, do not fear - Friend, good night.

Local log racing has taken it's normal summer break, with the next IPBA north sound race in September, at Seattle Yacht Clubs Port Madison outstation. This race is always a good one, and is one big super social event. There is one race this summer, the IPBA International Cruiser Race (ICR), and is a must race for anyone chasing the IPBA points.

The ICR will be in Canada this year, to be held on August 3rd and be run out of Thetis Island, British Columbia. The points received are 2.25 times the normal points for this one race. This year the normal entry fee is being waived, in hopes that more skippers will enter. This race is always a lot of fun, and the Canadians always have lots of fun. Many of those racing will be staying up in the BC area to do some cruising or attending the North American Invitational (NAI) National Championship log race which is the next weekend in Vancouver. Several BYC skippers have volunteered the use of their boats for the NAI  championship race.

The ICR race log was sent out with the IPBA news letter, the Unpredictable Log. If you did not get a copy, copies are available at the BYC clubhouse.

Annual Needs Your Submissions;
Its the summer season, and that means that once again the annual committee is collecting information for another BYC annual. We hope to have the annual ready for publishing by September, so the sooner we can make all our changes and updates, the better.

What does this mean for you?  If you have any information to submit to the annual, please do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting until the last minute.  This especially includes contact information, address changes, phone number changes, and your email address. (we added 40 email addresses last year, but with close to 300 members, we are still missing many addresses). We also still have missing pictures, either of people or of boats.  Flag officers and Skipperette officers, we'll also need you formal pictures.

Plus if you have anything noteworthy or informative that should be in the annual.

Submissions should be placed in the annual box in the clubhouse or e-mailed to bycannual@bremertonyachtclub.org. You can also also contact the annual chair Bret Halffman at: modernd@hotmail.com  or the web coordinator daveu@sptddog.com

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.

Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how to setup and modify web pages, contact webteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic storage of the club history.

If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way to earn points.  A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...

Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments, and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and relevant to members of the community.

Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact daveu@sptddog.com to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email addresses for next years annual.
