Heavy Weather Weekend is over for another year. The weekend
was a great success! The only "less than positive" comment was disagreement
on the skit winner. I want to thank everyone that gave their time to ensure
the weekend
was a success. Special thanks to V/C Rumbold, R/C Bachman, P/C Mike
Henry, P/C Mark Miller, P/C Leo Longeccker, Jim Griffith, Dale Armstrong,
Rick Ormiston, Charles Billings, Riley Evens, Jack DeWitt, John Rosendale,
and Juanita Armstrong with help of the Skipperettes.
Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Parade is in April 19th. Jerry Sengstock
is the Co/chair and is providing the yacht to decorate. The committee can
use help with the decorations and the games on Saturday. Service
points are always available for those interested.
An update on our outstation situation finds no change in status. Tacoma
Yacht Club is appealing to the State Dept. of Ecology and a hearing is
scheduled for March. BYC membership is requested to limit outstation use
to 13 boats at one time.
Seattle "Opening Day" is May 4th. Capt. Al Gonzalez and P/C Miller are
the POC.
The new Annuals are now available. They turned out great! Big thanks
to Mike Thomas and his committee. They all spent a lot of time and energy.
Some members chose not to have a picture with their name.
"Do your share plus a little" and always be positive.

Heavy Weather Weekend! What a weekend! Now that I have partially
recovered I can say that I enjoyed it and I hope that you did as well.
Thinking back on the weekend leaves a collage of scenes in my memory. While
walking the docks I saw members installing the timbers on the condo cover;
members welcoming the boats and assisting with their mooring; during the
whole weekend I saw teams on firewatch - not a glamorous volunteer task,
but extremely essential. Everytime I went by the galley someone was preparing
food or cleaning up after a meal - Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, Sat nite
snack and Sunday breakfast (and I have heard some members comment in the
past that we don't use the galley very much). Our fantastic dancers opening
the skits (very professional) ; Our Master of Ceremonies (PC Bob Wheeler)
all dressed up in a tux and Jobee the clown; the infamous skits -- Can
you imagine the grandchildren seeing how grownups can act so silly and
volunteer to dress up in such weird costumes? Their image of their staid
grandparents would be forever shattered! The BYC members that refuse to
quit dancing until we have to tell them to go home so we can clean up.
BYC sure loves to dance! The club being transformed many times by the set-up
guys. I think we will wear out the chairs and tables just setting up and
taking down so many times. Then seeing the racers checking in for the "big
race" and observers ready to carry out their assignments. The crowd around
the bulletin board at 2100 when the race results were posted looked like
they were Boeing employees seeing if they were being laid off. Sunday morning
and our own Socialman (PC Mike Henry) dressed in his suit and cape passing
out the race "hardware". And finally, the sterns of all the boats leaving
and an eerie quiet drifting in over the club. Another Heavy Weather Weekend
in the history books!
From the social committee side I really wish to express my admiration
and thanks to Rick & Maralee Orminston for taking on Friday night dinner;
to Dale & Lori Armstrong for the Sunday breakfast; to Chuck & Bunny
Daniel for thinking up and orchestrating the BYC skit (maybe we didn't
win the contest, but you did in my book) and to all the committee members.
You all did a superb job! How could we put an event on without the Skipperettes?
You all were right in there pitching the entire time. Thanks!
Looking for something to do in March? Well, we have the Fishing Derby
on March 3rd; Sunday Morning Breakfast on the 24th and a Friday
Evening Social Wine Tasting on the 29th and the Kids Easter Egg
Hunt on Saturday the 30th.

Heavy Weather 2002 is in the books. What an outstanding success
it was. Work party and countless others had the floats looking great and
the clubhouse was appropriately decked out in banners, burgees, flags and
signs. We looked great and the many comments I heard attested to it. I
would like to thank everyone for their super effort.
The following is probably the shortest do and don't list you'll ever
see about Heavy Weather;
DO: attend for the weekend whether you race or not, you'll have a wonderful
time.
DON'T: when introducing the Rear Commodores and their spouses from other
clubs, don't forget your spouse. Very important!! Gerri was very sweet
and understanding and all was forgiven and forgotten. On second thought,
perhaps I should stick with forgiven.
The galley project is about to enter into the next phase. The flooring
has been completed from the stairs behind the galley up to and including
the south mens head. Cabinet work is underway in the storeroom. Beginning
the week of February 25th ripout of the main stainless sink and the sanitizer
will begin. We are trying to time the work to cause minimal impact on social
events needing the galley.
The conference room has been freshly painted, heat installed, carpet
removed (new is on order), renewing the moorage board, in addition to some
BYC history that will adorn the walls.
The north entrance to the club is still in progress but will be finished
in the upcoming weeks.
There will be a sealed bid auction on the old hatch table that graced
the lounge area. The glass top has been removed. It will be cut to fit
the top of the sign in desk in the north foyer. If you are interested in
bidding it can be seen in front of the Vice Commodore?s parking spot. Place
your bid in a sealed envelope in my box in the lounge. Winning bid will
be announced at the March 4th General Meeting.
Spring is just around the corner. Think boating!

Bremerton Yacht Club's 68th Annual Heavy Weather Navigation Contest
This year Heavy Weather was anything but heavy weather, as the weather
gods held off the predicted incoming low front and allowed the contestants
the pleasure of sunny skies, light breezes and flat water. Of the
50 vessels participating, 21 were BYC boats. Great turnout!
The course started off downtown Bremerton, proceeded north up Port Orchard
past Battle Point, did a great loop to start the return route south past
Brownsville, back to Bremerton, followed by a transit up Port Washington
at seven knots and finishing within site of BYC. In the end, BYC
boats did darned good with Capt Chuck Silvernail on SOLMAR taking
1st Place Overall, as well as the Novice Trophy, and BYC boats sweeping

The Team Trophy was won by Queen City YC with a top four boat average
score of 0.7926%, barely edging out the Bremerton YC team's score of
0.8497%.
The U.S. Navy Vessel Class was won by the crew aboard BALD EAGLE from
the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Center at Keyport who barely edged
out the crew aboard OLD MAN IV from Navy Region Northwest.
Special thanks to all you BYC skippers and crews who turned out.
BYC racers still stand tall in the log racing world. You helped make
the weekend a great SOCIAL EVENT!!
UPCOMING RACES are the MBYC Boomerang on March 2, the Olympia YC Governor's
Cup on March 9, the Gig Harbor YC and the QCYC/SYC Eagle Harbor Race on
April 6. Come on out; they are all good social events. Skull
sessions will be the Tuesday evening prior to each race at 7:00 PM.

From
your Environmental Chair:
Hi, my name is Bret Halffman, I'm your Environmental Chairperson.
I've always believed when it comes to environmental issues that "No news
is good news" meaning we have been doing a great job keeping this club
in compliance with the laws and haven't had to address any problems in
the past year.
To ensure we stay on top of things, please continue using BMP (best
management practices) to protect our environment. Take a moment and check
out the latest BMP brochure hanging on the club store bulletin board or
go online to www.cleanboating.com
for the latest and greatest information. If you haven't read it in a while,
it may be time to brush up.
One of my duties is to ensure the Hazardous Storage Area is in compliance
with Federal Regulations. How can I help out you say? Here's your answer:
1. Do not leave containers of any kind in the shed I.E. 1 gal. Anti-freeze
bottles or used oil filters. You can drain them but do not leave them there.
Manage your time when draining containers by setting them up to drain and
coming back later that same day to discard the container.
2. If you notice a tank nearing its full mark, Put a "FULL DO NOT USE"
note on the tank and contact me ASAP @ 308-9120 night or 476-9185 days.
I will arrange for it to be pumped. For those of you feeling real energetic
call the pickup number located in your BYC Annual.
3. If you spill anything in or near the sheds, clean it up.
4. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT leave any containers laying around with substances
in it. Worst case scenario: We get Local, State or Federal audited and
have to pay for expensive testing to find out what it is, then it has to
be cleaned up, and a possible fine. Of course then, we will probably be
subject to more auditing in the future?Let's not go there.
Pat yourselves on the back for doing your part and keeping the club
areas environmentally sound.

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web
page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be
used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of
BYC. Paper or electonic artwork is acceptable.
Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the
web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how
to setup and modify web pages, contact webteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We
are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing
in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic
storage of the club history.
If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way
to earn points. A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you
want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web
page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments,
and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and
relevant to members of the community.
Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact daveu@sptddog.com
to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email addresses
for next years annual.
