Hot news of the month - Opening Day was, without a doubt, a grand time. Food wine and old friends almost everywhere you turned and fairly decent weather, too. Capt. Jerry Sengstocks Decorated Boat entry took FIRST PLACE. [Pictures!] Congratulations to Jerry and crew for bringing home the honor to BYC. Well done! It was rumored that the lock attendants had said it was the first hydroplane to navigate the locks at no wake speed. You should have seen it - what an awesome float. In addition, our Officers Dress boat entry took THIRD PLACE. Wow! Capt. Ray Norton must have popped one snappy salute as we passed in revue. Congratulations Ray, and to all the others too, that contributed to the starboard list on Impressions.
May 9th was Awards Night and, true to form, our Commodore Bill Rumbold had some surprises. It was an enjoyable evening and the first potluck we've had in some time and it was delicious.
May 16th was our Change of Watch. I want to congratulate our new Vice Commodore, Rod Perryman, new Rear Commodore, Charlie Billings, new Secretary, Ron Morse and our two new Executive Committee members, Capt. Chuck Silvernail and Capt. Dave Cleator. I look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead.
May 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th is the Memorial Day cruise to Oro Bay. This is planned to be a relaxing weekend with a special tribute on Sunday to our fallen warriors in military service. Many people today think of this holiday as nothing more than a long weekend. Pause for a moment and think of where you might be or what you might be doing or what you might have if these people hadn't made the ultimate sacrifice. Honoring these heroes is what Memorial Day is about.

Let me begin my new term with a rundown of the events that are scheduled for the upcoming summer months. Summer is just around the corner and that means lots of cruising time for all. First on the horizon is the Memorial Day Cruise to our Oro Bay Outstation on May 23 through 26. This will be the first Cruise for our new and very capable Fleet Captain Doug Sanford. This is the kick off cruise for the summer. There will be something for everyone, lots of fun and games so please sign-up. The best news is that there is not going to be a limit of boats this year.
While we are at Oro Bay, Gig Harbor and Rainier Yacht clubs will be making use of our club facilities. If your slip will be available and don't object, please let the Float Chairman, Capt. Jim Picinich know.
The Commodores Ball, honoring Ex- Commodore Bill Rumbold, will be held on May 31st. Capt. Harry Davis is putting this show together so I'm sure it will be a good one. Please sign up on the sign-up sheet so the committee can plan the menu accordingly. Come out and enjoy the evening.
Our first Picnic in the Park is on June 18 at 6:00 p.m. Always a great
time to get together with other members. Look for the sign-up sheet on the
clubhouse bulletin board.
On June 27 our annual Big Brother Cruise to Queen City Outstation in
Eagle
Harbor is scheduled. This is always an enjoyable laid back weekend,
and
downtown Winslow is a fun place to spend the afternoon perusing the quaint
shops for terrific treasures. Come on out for this one.
[Starts on Friday with a Potluck Dinner; Further details: Announcement in
June Towline or call Capt. Doug Sanford, (inserted by Webteam)]
That's it from me this time, I'll see you on the water.

As I write this first R/C article, I am reminded that May has been an extremely busy month for Sharon and me what with the Opening Day celebrations, greeting the USS Camden's return to Bremerton, the elections on the 5th, Awards Night on the 9th, Mother's Day on the 11th, Installation of Officers on the 16th, and the month is just barely two weeks old.
Speaking of being busy, by the time you read this, the Work Party of May 17 & 18 will be history, but I thank all of you who participated, particularly Capt. Don Sherwood for his leadership, for all of your hard work, not only to maintain our club facilities, but the extra effort to make our club shine. For those of you who still need your work party hours, check with Capt. Brian Golden, as he has lots of work to be completed down at the Oro Bay Outstation.
As you all know, the cruising season is upon us, and there are a few thoughts I'd like to share with you all. Remember, the Club ice machine is for all of us. Don't take more than your share, and remember to fill two bags for each one you take out of the freezer.
If you're coming up the brow, and you see too many carts sitting at the foot, bring one or two up to the clubhouse so others can use them.
It's also "clean-up" time on our boats. Please keep the recycle area clean and neat, and stow your refuse in the dumpster. Remember, it's for club use, and not for "stuff from home".
It's also a good idea to take a look at your fire extinguishers and other safety equipment to make sure they will serve you should you need them. Additionally, we have several qualified CG and Power Squadron inspectors in our club and it's a great time to take advantage of them before we go cruising.
And last but not least, remember to renew your vessel registration before the 30 June deadline and affix the 2004 stickers (red this year) to your boat. While you're at it, make a copy of your registration for the Float Committee files. Even if your boat is documented, state law requires you to have it registered with the State of Washington. Have a great, and safe, summer. I hope to see you on the water or around the clubhouse, doing the things that brought us to join Bremerton Yacht Club in the first place.

Where has this year gone? It feels like just a few weeks ago I was being installed and now in just a few days Sandy Baker will be installed as your new President. I know she will do an outstanding job.I would to take this opportunity to thank all my officers, standing committee chairs, appointed chairs, galley cooks and crews and the countless volunteers that have made this year's success possible. I will treasure your friendship always. I could not have asked for a greater group to work with. Thank You!
We have had an extremely busy May, Past Presidents/Mothers Day luncheon and WIC back to back. We were honored to have 13 Past Presidents in attendance at our PP/Mother Day Luncheon. Jerry Dick and her committee treated us to a delicious lunch and Arlene Gorski made us all laugh as she raffled off crazy gifts. We welcomed into membership Jan Cordodor, wife of new member David. Jan and David have a Tollycraft, being a working lady she hopes to be able to attend as many of the Skipperette functions as work and time allows.
As soon as our guest departed the Skipperette "Worker Bees" went into full humm, setting up for Women's Interclub Council (WIC) the following day. Thanks to the decorating skills of Sue Kela the place came to life in true Mexican style. Bright colors, parrots, hats and morochas. It looked so festive. The addition of panel screens (purchased by Skipperettes but procured by Sharon Lillybridge) were a much needed addition. Wafting from the kitchen were the delicious smells of fresh salsa and enchiladas. Joan Vehrs and her small galley crew of Doreen Marshal, Sue Kela and Pat Downs were busy fixing a south of the boarder delight. Joanie herself prepared 100 hand made tamales! On Thursday the place was ready for our guest and BYC Bridge. We received so many nice comments about the food, the service (take a bow Skupperettes!), and the decorations. You all made me proud to be your President. Thanks, VP/WIC Sandy Baker, for a beautiful theme and a great day.
On May 9th BYC held their annual Awards Night. This year Commodore Bill Rumbold initiated several new awards, among them "BYC Women of the Year." This years recipient was someone who is always there to help BYC members, goes out of her way for the betterment of the BYC, has seen ways to improve the club and carried those ideas into action... this years award went to a wife of a BYC member.....Sylvia Wilson. Congratulations, Sylvia. A perfect choice!
Just a couple a reminders:
Installation is June 4th, 6:30 pm social time. Please come and bring your Skippers. Remember I will be holding a free drawing with all the unlucky raffle tickets accumulated during the year. You must be present to win.
The combined board meeting with old and new chairman will be on June 17th, 10 am in the hall, please have everything ready to turn over to your successor. We will have a birthday card making party following the board meeting, bring a sack lunch.
I am looking forward to see everyone in June,
Gerri Bachman,
President Skipperettes

Of the seven BYC skippers that raced, five did trophy as follows:

The BYC Webteam is always looking for all kinds of contributions and new ideas: From artwork (to help spruce up the web page), to photos of recent or historical events or sights, to travel or committee reports. Any information which would make life easier for new members would be most welcome. Also, we would like to remind all members that we are looking for volunteers for working on the web page or particular parts of it. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how to setup and modify web pages, contact bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic storage of the club history.
If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way to earn points. It is also a lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
Finally, do not forget to check the web page regularly for upcoming events. Again, if you want to add something (however small or short) to the web page, contact the Webteam via the web page or directly via Email (bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org). We've received some very favorable comments, and we want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and relevant to members.
