I have to hand it to our Vice Commodore and his first Picnic
in the Park Chairman, Capt. Bill Baker. I understand they had over 120
folks attend the picnic! If this event portends this year's social season,
it will blow the dust off the record books! Way to go Bob & Bill!
Our Regatta Chairman for Sail, Capt. Joe Payne, has taken on the task
of implementing a Youth Sailing Program for kids 10 to 15. He made a very
impressive presentation to the E-Committee and won unanimous support for
his program. He and his committee are planning two sessions this July to
introduce kids to sailing. He has even conned some sailing dinghies out
of the Vice Commodore of the
Poulsbo Yacht Club, Skip Peters, for this
program. I believe this is a much needed program that can provide a kick-start
to our children. Joe emphasizes that it is not only for BYC kids, but other
children sponsored by BYC members can also participate. If you have a neighbor
or a friend with a child that you would like to see in a sailing program,
give Joe a call. Who knows? Maybe the parent of the child will become a
valued member of BYC! Give Joe a pat on the back for this initiative! Joe
can also use a couple of helpers with dinghies that can serve as safety/chase
boats. I think you would find it a lot of fun!
Now waste water treatment is not a very exciting subject, but Capt.
Mike Leedy has taken his job seriously as Waste Water Chairman and has
been doing some real long overdue cleaning of the tanks and disposal of
the accumulated material. This is something that most of you would not
think about, but the work that Mike has been doing in the past couple of
weeks will make it much nicer to use the railway and keep the odor down.
Thanks Mike!
Another first! Capt. Ray Gorski had the health department officials
out to check out and approve the Pump-Out Station. We are operational!
More information will be found elsewhere in this edition on how to use
the equipment. I have assigned the responsibility of the operation, maintenance
and repair to the Float Committee. Please use the facility, but follow
the directions and leave it as clean as you found it now.
You saw the June edition of the Towline with the collage of pictures.
Neat job Harry! Capt. Davis is looking for pictures to be featured in the
Towline so when you are at an event get your camera out and take some "candid
camera" shots.
I know that our Annual Committee, under Capt. Bret Halffman, is hard
at work. They are collecting information and pictures and laying the groundwork
for another great annual. As you leaf through the current edition you see
your friends with no pictures of themselves or their boats and I know many
addressees and telephone numbers have changed in the past year. Take it
upon yourself to get after your buddy to get his info current and send
in the pictures. Update yours at the same time. If everyone would take
a couple of minutes now and check your data and send it to Bret or put
it in the Annual Committee box it will make for a much nicer looking and
useful yearbook.
Have a great summer on the water. Be safe, and remember the member's
oath you took. It states, "I will assist another boater in distress and
do all within my power to preserve the property and lives of others when
endangered." Live up to your oath if the occasion presents itself.

A few days ago it was 90 degrees and today as I write it's
raining. Ah! Life in the Northwest. Well, our Treasurer, Capt. Bill Baker
and his First Mate, Sandy, must have a California secret in how to control
or at least predict the weather. They kicked off the summer season with
the first Picnic in the Park. The weather couldn't have been better, just
as they predicted and the turnout was proof positive with over 100 members,
family and friends attending. Great raffle prizes were provided by our
in house company, Raffles by Arlene, and along with ice cream rounded out
a perfect evening. Good job Bill, Sandy and crew.
Next Picnic in the Park is July 17 at 1800 with a horseshoe tournament
beginning at 1600. Theme is western with Capt. Al Gonsalez and mate Joanne
doing western beef. If you attended their picnic last year when they did
this you'll recall the rave reviews. It was delicious. Sign up early as
this will be a big hit again, I'm sure.
July 4th there is no official cruise planned but on July 3rd an informal
raft up in Poulsbo is being talked up around the club. Bring finger foods
for cockpit hor deuv'res if attending.
Well the galley is now shut down as we enter the last phase of our remodel.
Our new reefer is in as well as the two gas ranges and the stacked convection
ovens and new cabinetry. Our deadline is August 1st for the Grand XIV Officers
Cruise In. Your club needs your help now. There is some demolition to be
done, painting, and many other things. See Capt. Don Sherwood, Work Party
Chair, if you're willing to help. Weekdays, nights, or weekends, he'll
accommodate. This will be a first rate galley and scullery when complete
that you, the membership, own. Be an active part of it and retire your
work party time early and relax the rest of the year.
Side note - what cabinetry that could be salvaged as well as one gas
range have been sold and the large hood over the ranges appears to be sold
also. The club has one gas range remaining, the brown refrigerator behind
the galley and the cooler that was in the store, up for sale at very good
pre sale prices to members before I run an ad in the papers. The proceeds,
of course, revert to the treasury. See or call the Vice Commodore for details.
Remember, as you cruise this summer, that your burgee tells the whole
world where you're from. Your boats? overall condition, fenders appropriately
in or out, proper flag etiquette, and good seamanship and courtesy will
speak volumes about our club and the pride we take in it and our boats.
Coast Guard boardings this summer will be greatly increased due to the
added security after 9-11. Be courteous and helpful if boarded. Remember,
these folks are just doing their job which is protecting us from another
disaster. Their shifts are long and in all kinds of weather and they don't
need grief from the people they're trying to protect.
Have a great and safe summer!

Now the elections are over, Angela and I want to thank you
all for your vote of confidence. This allows me the opportunity to give
back to the club for all the wonderful times I have had over my past sixteen
years of membership.
As I look around at our fine facility, I think of what it took to make
it what it is today. It clearly shows a great deal of hard work and
dedication by members, much like yourselves. I am happy to announce
that proud tradition is still alive and well today.
My predecessors recognized that tradition of hard work and dedication
and I am looking forward to following in their footsteps and uphold the
tradition. Some mighty big shoes I have to fill, I know.
Some housekeeping items to remind you all of. Remember to be considerate
to your fellow member and return the dock cart when you have finished with
it and not leave it at your slip. While you are at it make sure to tip
it on its end so it stays dry for the next user. When you work in
the shop, remember to clean up after yourself. Return any tools you
borrow to the shop so they are available the next time they are needed.
I am sad to report there are several tools missing. The dumpsite
is for items from your boat only and not for items from home.
Cruising season is finally here, and Angela and I wish you all safe
and happy cruising this summer. See you out there.

Our first big cruise of the season is history and we had a
fine turn out. Nineteen boats made it all the way to Olympia, including
those famous Shelton explorers, Gary 'Magellan' Clauson and Cliff 'Columbus'
Lillybridge. The weather was awesome and the facilities at Swantown
Marina were great. Most boats arrived Friday afternoon in time for
cocktails and dinner at their favorite Olympia restaurant. Saturday
morning started with a breakfast of Thomas Tummytuckers and eye openers.
The rest of the day was dedicated to touring the Capital building, shopping
or a visit to the Farmers Market.
Saturday evening found us at the
marina park dining on BBQ port sandwiches and coleslaw. The cocktail
hour was followed by another cocktail hour and another, well you get the
idea.
Sunday breakfast included French toast, pastries, fruit and of course,
eye openers. We were treated to lunch on the dock with leftover BBQ
sandwiches and then a blindfolded dingy race. Debbie and Dave Hagen
proved to be the team to beat while the rest of us just beat up the bows
of our own boats with the oars and dinghies. Hagens even beat a challenging
team from Quartermaster harbor Yacht Club. Our Blackout Bingo game
was a success once the code was cracked and Rick and Maralee Ormiston were
the first place finishers.
We had lasagna for Sunday's dinner, thanks to all who donated your time
and ovens. After dinner the cocktail hour continued aboard Harry
and Paula Davis's Fairwinds. The music and the mast were rocking
far into the evening.
Monday's cruise home was in beautiful weather. All in all we had
a great time, even though we were not at Oro Bay. Sometimes different
can be fun.
I would like to thank those who helped Cathy and I get through our first
cruise: P/C Mark & Roxanne Miller, Capt. Rick & Maralee Ormiston,
Capt. John & Denise Rosendale, P/C Leo & Sue Longenecker and everyone
else who lended a hand! Thank you!

Local log racing has taken it's normal summer break, with the
next IPBA north sound race in September, at Seattle Yacht Clubs Port Madison
outstation. This race is always a good one, and is one big super social
event. There is one race this summer, the IPBA International Cruiser Race
(ICR), and is a must race for anyone chasing the IPBA points.
The ICR will be in Canada this year, to be held on August 3rd and be
run out of Thetis Island, British Columbia. The points received are 2.25
times the normal points for this one race. This year the normal entry fee
is being waived, in hopes that more skippers will enter. This race is always
a lot of fun, and the Canadians always have lots of fun. Many of those
racing will be staying up in the BC area to do some cruising or attending
the North American Invitational (NAI) National Championship log race which
is the next weekend in Vancouver. Several BYC skippers have volunteered
the use of their boats for the NAI championship race.
The ICR race log was sent out with the IPBA news letter, the Unpredictable
Log. If you did not get a copy, copies are available at the BYC clubhouse.

Annual Needs Your Submissions;
Its the summer season, and that means that once again the annual
committee is collecting information for another BYC annual. We hope to
have the annual ready for publishing by September, so the sooner we can
make all our changes and updates, the better.
What does this mean for you? If you have any information to submit
to the annual, please do so as soon as possible, rather than waiting until
the last minute. This especially includes contact information, address
changes, phone number changes, and your email address. (we added 40 email
addresses last year, but with close to 300 members, we are still missing
many addresses). We also still have missing pictures, either of people
or of boats. Flag officers and Skipperette officers, we'll also need
you formal pictures.
Plus if you have anything noteworthy or informative that should be in
the annual.
Submissions should be placed in the annual box in the clubhouse or e-mailed
to bycannual@bremertonyachtclub.org. You can also also contact the annual
chair Bret Halffman or the web coordinator

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web
page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be
used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of
BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.
Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the
web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how
to setup and modify web pages, contact bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org
We
are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing
in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic
storage of the club history.
If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way
to earn points. A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you
want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web
page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments,
and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and
relevant to members of the community.
Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact
me to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email
addresses
for next years annual.
