The Bremerton Yacht Club has lost one of its most esteemed members. Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm passed away on Monday, 13 January. Carl in his quiet unassuming manner has had a tremendous impact on boating here in the Puget Sound area. Not only was he the Commodore of BYC in 1960, having joined fifty years ago, but Carl was also an active long time member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron, teaching classes in boating with his sidekick, Jack Hensley. He has remained involved in all the club's activities throughout the years and has been an avid predicted log racer for many years. When Special Peoples Cruise needed boats, he and SEA NYMPH were always available to take a group out and he enjoyed it as much as his passengers did. Social functions would always find him and Gerry in attendance. I could always depend on seeing Carl at all the general membership meetings sitting in the back making sure the bridge was taking care of his club. I guess that is one of the things I admired about Carl, he was dependable. He always had a kind word for everyone and was always ready to participate. I know that many members of BYC, both old and new, will find a tremendous void in their yacht club lives without Carl. I know I shall. I will miss him - a lot.

We will be conducting a Memorial Service to honor and to recognize the services of Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm on Saturday, 1 February at 1400 in the club main hall. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron have also expressed a desire to participate and will be in attendance. There will be more information posted in the club as plans are finalized.

One of Carl's favorite pastimes was participating in the Heavy Weather predicted log race and this will be the first in many years that he has not been a participant. I am sure he will be "Up There" watching over the race and cheering the BYC team on to victory.  The Heavy Weather Weekend is coming up fast and plans are being finalized. Captain Jack Hensley has a great contest laid out and with the tides and currents being pretty light, it should be a "piece of cake", according to Jack. I have heard from other yacht club commodores that they have hired drama coaches for their skit preparation and we are expecting a great turnout so be sure and come and enjoy the  weekend activities and don't forget to find a committee to help out on. Remember, as Past Commodore Mike Henry has imprinted on our brains, "LOG RACING IS A SOCIAL EVENT!" Heavy Weather Weekend is an "all hands event" and needs all the help we can muster to make it a success.

I am sure that if you have seen Capt. Hensley lately, he has regaled you on the results of the Queen City Predicted Log Race on 11 January. It is all true! Our members went over and "cleaned the clock of the lake racers". Congratulations are in order to PC Mike Henry, Capt. Chuck Silvernail, and Capt. Owen Ritter placing first, second and third overall and to the other BYC members that brought home hardware. I am sure Jack will have more (much more) in his column on this subject!

Something to start thinking about - elections of new officers and Executive Committee members! The way the past eight months have gone, elections will be upon us very soon. We need energetic, well-qualified members willing to step forward to assume the leadership roles of the club. The Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer and two members of the E-Committee will come up for election in May. If you are interested in taking a responsible role in club management, contact any of the current bridge or any past commodore and they will fill you in on how-to and the duties and responsibilities. Don't be bashful, step forward and volunteer, the club really needs your support.

Monday, January 13th, Bremerton Yacht Club lost an elder statesman. Long time member, Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm crossed the bar. Carl loved boating and was very active in his club and several other boating organizations up until just weeks ago. Quiet and soft spoken, Carl will be missed. Gerri and I send our sympathies to his wife Gerry and his family in this sad time.

January 1Oth, Capt. AI Gonzalez and crew put on a Mexican night dinner complete with margaritas. Great time. Newer member, Capt. Betty Smith, won the best costume. Congrats, Betty! And a word of caution -if any of you ever enter a contest requiring speed and agility, watch out for Capt. Roger Horne, he is one fast guy. Must be from all the years carrying all that brass around. Sorry you didn't win the contest, Roger, but it sure was fun watching. 

Next up is the main event -- Heavy Weather weekend on the 14th, 15th and

16th of February. This weekend is open to all club members. You don't have to be a racer to come down and have a great time. Friday kicks it off with tapping the keg at 5:30 followed by a from scratch lasagna dinner, antipasto plate, caesar salad, garlic bread, Chianti and spumoni ice cream. Capt. Doug and Admiral Pam Smith are chairing it so you know it will be good. Also, there will be the accompanying raffle with some really cool and useful prizes. Dancing 'til11:00 follows and all for $7.50. It is also Valentines Day, so don't forget your Sweetheart. The 15th is Race Day. Last year we had 22 racers from BYC bring home a lot of hardware. Come out and race. See what we can do this year. Remember, Log Racing is a social event. Also, again this year, Dominos Pizza will be taking orders in the lounge from 10:00 to 4:00. At 5:00, the hall is opened to skit seating. If you want to laugh a lot, don't miss this. Following the skits is dancing 'til1:00 A.M. with a snack served around midnight. Sunday morning is the big H/W breakfast after which the hardware is handed out to the race winners and the Famous Rubber Clam Gun goes to the skit winner. What a weekend!

As usual, we will need observers for the Saturday race. If you or a friend ever wondered what log racing was all about, this is your chance. Contact Capt. Jack Hensley. We need all the help we can get from the membership on H/W weekend. There are many committees looking for people to help out. Give your club a hand and get some points in the process.

Last event in February is the Fishing Derby on the 23rd. Capt. Vic Piotrowski is the chairman and he will have refreshments afterwards and some good prizes on the ladder. See his flyer in this Towline.

BYC Fishing Derby February 23, 2003 Derby starts at daylight and ends at 2pm. Derby boundary is Fishing Area 10. All fish must be at weigh-in line by 2pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Club Store for: $5.00 for Adults $3.00 for 16 & under Prizes awarded by weight for legal Salmon immediately after weigh-in. A prize will also be awarded for largest scrap fish, by weight. If not enough fish are caught, remaining prizes will be awarded by drawing, must be present to win. Last item. If your boat is for sale and is being shown, for security reasons the owner or a current BYC member must accompany the prospective buyer to the boat and back. A broker may petition the Executive Committee for a service provider card and if approved may bring clients in and out without escort but it is not a ticket to wander the docks but only to the boat(s) being shown. A third option is for a member to sponsor a broker or repair person as a service provider and apply to the Security Chairman for a card. All others are technically in a trespass situation.

It is really hard to tell what season it is with this warm spring like weather we have been having.  I just keep telling myself  it isn't over yet and we could still get some winter weather.  I will just hope that it isn't too terrible.  In the mean time we can enjoy it while it is here.

What a terrific holiday season we have had.  Lots of great events for us all to celebrate the Joy of the Season.  Well it is now over and I hope you have recuperated.  Just don't relax too much, because before you know it, Heavy Weather will be upon us, the biggest event of BYC year.  There are lots of ways our members can participate to help to make this a successful event.  If you haven't already signed up for a committee there are still openings.  Just tell a committee chairperson or a bridge member that you want to get involved and they will steer you  in the right direction.  I am sure you will find participating rewarding and fun and you will enjoy yourself immensely as Angela and I have.

Speaking of Heavy Weather let me remind you of the work party that is scheduled for February 8 & 9.  This work Party will focus on cleaning up the clubhouse grounds and docks to make our club shine for the visiting yacht clubs.  A sign up list is posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

There are burgees missing on the south end wall of the lounge that were moved during the installation of the new curtains.  I know that two of them were white with light blue crosses on them.  If you know the whereabouts of these burgees please contact me so I can reinstall them to the wall.

• Capt. Hensley reported on the 'SWEEP' BYC made at the QCYC Log race, 11 January, on 'The Lake'.
• A comprehensive presentation on BYC insurance was given by our broker, Sears & Associates.
• A 'new member' meeting was proposed by the Commodore, to include the V/C, R/C, and Committee Chairs, for members who have joined in the past year. Membership Chairman Capt. Silvernail will schedule the meeting.
• Capt. Leedy reported training for members on electrolysis detection/elimination is in the mill.
• The Annual Budget draft for 2003-2004 is underway. Committee chairs should submit any changes to the Budget & Fiscal Committee.
• Capt. Golden reported 'we have heat in the Gazebo thanks to Capt. Tim Baker'.
• The 'pigeon problem' is still under investigation.
• High Tides of Washington, a boat cleaning & detailing company has been granted on-site service at BYC.
• 2003 Youth Sailing Program was presented with consensus for a funding presentation at the General Meeting on February 3rd.
• It was noted that if a member leaves his/her boathouse locked, a key should be left with the Club Caretakers for access in an emergency.
• It was noted with sadness that P/C Carl Wilhelm, a 50 year member and Commodore in 1960, crossed the bar this morning. A memorial service is being planned.

 Contingent on the finalization of the excepted offer on the boat. The maximum length is defined as the open waterway between the walkway and a Line that extends along the outside edge of the pilings securing the north club Cover, approximately 52 feet.

Heavy Weather weekend is Feb. 14, 15, & 16. If you are moored under the common cover and you are planning to race let me know so that we can find a non-racer to trade slips with you prior to the timbers going up. The timbers will be put up Thursday Feb. 13th at 1300 and removed on the 16th at 1300. We will also need a block of slips on the north side of "A" string for contestant check in. Information can be put in the Float Chairman mailbox, or you can give me a call at 782-0219. 
 

The next Float Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday Feb. 11, at 1900.

These last two months been an active time for the Skipperettes. In December we hosted the dinner for the Special Peoples helpers and planned a fun BYC Children's Party with a visit from Saint Nick. In addition to our own Christmas party several ladies attend the WIC luncheon at Day Island.

January's meeting was a day potluck with a master gardener speaking on getting your garden ready for spring. In February we will have dessert meeting, 6:30 pm, featuring talented weaver Judy Rice. 

Skipperettes will be busy helping BYC. in February: serving lunch during work party, assisting with Heavy Weather Breakfast and preparing lunch on Saturday for those not racing. 

The "Ladies Bunch for Lunch" has two outings planned. On Monday, Feb 24th, we will visit the Museum of Glass in Tacoma in the morning followed by lunch. On Tuesday March 25th we will shop at the Port Gamble general store and have high tea at La La Chocolates. Sign up sheets are available at the meetings, in the club house or you can call President, Gerri Bachman.

The 2003 predicted log season is here, with the Queen City Yacht Club's "First of the Season" log race on Lake Washington scheduled for Saturday, January 11. The logs have been mailed to the regular IPBA racers, but if you didn't get a copy, you can get a copy at the BYC clubhouse. QCYC has a Friday night Burger Bash, a Saturday Awards Dinner Dance, as well as a Champagne Brunch on Sunday, all part of the race weekend. We will have a skull session at the BYC clubhouse on Tuesday, January 7, at 7:00 PM to go over the race. 

The first club predicted log race of the year is the BYC Thompson Trophy race on Sunday, January 19. This is a good chance to get into the swing of log racing before the big Heavy Weather race. This is always a fun race, and will be followed by the usual potluck dinner. We will have a planning session for the race on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:00 PM for any racers that need it. You can pick up a copy of the race at the BYC clubhouse.

The big race of the year for BYC is Heavy Weather on February 15. We want to get as many BYC boats as possible to enter the contest, so we can win the team trophy back from Queen City Yacht Club. We will have two planning sessions for this one, the first  on Wednesday, February 5 to go over the course, and than February 12 to cover the expected currents. Remember, "LOG RACING IS A SOCIAL EVENT".

BREMERTON YACHT CLUB'S  69TH ANNUAL HEAVY WEATHER NAVIGATION CONTEST
Saturday February 15, 2003
 

The 69th Annual Bremerton Yacht Club Heavy Weather Predicted Log Navigation Contest is scheduled for February 15, 2003. This is the largest predicted log navigation contest of its kind in the world.  The object of this contest is to demonstrate a skipper's navigational skills at normal vessel cruise speeds, as opposed to other types of contests that involve high vessel speeds. It is anticipated that approximately 50 to 60 contestant boats will entere to challenge the 23 nautical mile course. They will transit Port Washington Narrows, Sinclair Inlet, Rich Passage, and Yukon Harbor over a period from about noon to 4:30 PM on February 15.  The competing skippers are veteran boaters who take this sport very seriously, are well aware of the capabilities of their vessels and maintain a keen vigilance of everything around them.  The essence of a navigation contest is to compare a skipper's predicted elapsed time over a prescribed course with the actual cruise time to run the course, and the skipper with the closest times wins.  The challenge of predicting the currents through Port Washington Narrows and Rich Passage has, over the years, made this a very difficult part of the contest course. 

Each of the contest boats is required to have an independent observer on board, who's duty is to record the time of day at the start of the contest and at each of it's six checkpoints. It is from these recorded times that the contest committee establishes the contest winners. Trophies are awarded for the top three overall winners, as well as the top three in each of five classes.  An award is given to the yacht club who has the best four man team score and a trophy is also given to the best skipper who has entered the contest for the first time. 

Impartial observers play a key part in the contest, as they represent the yacht club during the actual running of the course and record the required times needed to establish the winners. Training for observers will be held at the Bremerton Yacht Club on Tuesday, February 11, and Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 PM each night, with donuts and coffee provided. Anyone interested in being a observer during the contest should attend one of the two training sessions.

Heavy Weather Weekend is a busy time at the Bremerton Yacht Club, starting on Friday night with a light dinner available at the clubhouse and music to dance away the night. Saturday is the Heavy Weather Navigation Contest, followed that evening by skits put on by the different yacht clubs, followed by more music and dancing and a late night snack. Sunday is the famous Heavy Weather breakfast followed by the presentation of awards and trophies.

“OFF TO THE RACES” at Opening Day, May 3.

That’s the theme for this year’s celebration over in Seattle.  Sounds simple enough 
that we ought to be able to easily decorate one sailboat and one powerboat for entry 
into the Opening Day parade.  A well known BYC float designer par excellence has 
indicated interest in helping with the hard part (that would be the thinking part).  
What we need now are the boats to be decorated for entry in the Decorated Sail and 
Decorated Powerboat classes.  If you volunteer yours, our hosts, Queen City YC, 
always try to provide reserved slips for boats entered in the parade; sure beats 
being on the outer end of a seven boat raft off the dock.  
Capt Ray Norton has volunteered to be the BYC entry in the Dressed Powerboat class.    
It would be really nice to compliment that entry by having a BYC entry in the Dressed 
Sailboat class, as well.  Other classes open to club entries are the Novelty Decorated, 
Classic Power and Classic Sail.
Equally as important is the need for enough people to crew the BYC entries.  Maybe we 
can even provide transportation to QCYC and back for those willing to crew but not 
wanting to take their boats over.

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.

Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how to setup and modify web pages, contact bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org We are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or typing in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other electronic storage of the club history.

If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way to earn points.  A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
