The rains have started and there is snow on the Olympics. It
must be the beginning of the winter season and with the season comes the
increasing tempo of social activities at the club. I believe December has
to be the busiest month of the year and it is gearing up to be just , as
well as a fun time for all.
Having the club all decorated in its finery for the Christmas season
with a big tree all blazing with lights, candy canes, evergreen boughs
and bright red ribbons adorning the walls and windows is always a wonderful
sight and provides me with such a great feeling.
Together with the decorations are the activities that make it all worthwhile.
---The
Special Peoples Cruise for the 200 mentally and physically disadvantaged
individuals. These folks look forward every year to the boat ride and the
opportunity to talk to Santa on the VHF and wave to him as they pass by
his boat (Several times my group has exclaimed how Santa had lost weight
when they see him standing on the sailboat. This year I understand that
Santa has gained a few pounds thanks to a new suit). ---The
Kids
Christmas Party for the children and grandchildren where their eyes are
all aglow with the expectations of the special day. ---The lighted boat
parades where you can hear the kids on shore calling out in the darkness
to all the boats and to Santa.
--- The Christmas Dinner where many of the
members come and enjoy an outstanding turkey dinner with all the trimmings
put on by the club's officers, executive committee and flag officers. With
each dinner we have great entertainment with the Grinch or Santa making
an appearance and a choral group singing their hearts out for us. ---The
best of all is the "real day", Christmas Day. The 25th. This is the day
the world celebrates the birth of Christ and it is an opportunity for all
of us to celebrate this great event.
If you can help out on December 1st for the Special Peoples Cruise,
Mike Leedy can use you and your boat. I understand members of Port
Orchard and Poulsbo yacht clubs will be coming to help out again. They,
the credit union volunteers, high school basketball team, Para Transit,
Kitsap Harbor Tours and the Navy folks are much appreciated for their outstanding
support!
Captain Doug and his Admiral Pam Smith will be at the December
Dinner Buffet Members Meeting to tell us about their fantastic voyage to
the Queen Charlottes this past summer Captain Gonzalez is cooking
up another hearty dinner for all attendees.
The bridge officers, Executive Committee and the flag officers will
be hosting the annual Christmas Dinner on Sunday, 15 December. Turkey and
all the trimmings ( together with Pam's famous gravy). I am sure
Santa will be making a stop to see if his BYC friends have been good or
bad this year. Come on out and enjoy a great dinner.
Lynne and I want to wish you and all of our BYC family a Very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year! Take a little time out of your busy
schedule to think about the other people out there. Maybe throw your spare
change in the bellringers pot for those less fortunate; perhaps help out
at your favorite charity. Please don't forget the soldiers, sailors, airman
and coast guard that are on duty. Include them in your prayers.

As we enter into the last month of 2002 it is a time of giving
thanks, of celebration and of remembrance. With Veterans Day having just
passed, 9-11 not far behind and the very real possibility of war in America's
near future, please consider these three simple things at your family gatherings
this Thanksgiving. Thanks to the veterans who have secured and guaranteed
what we enjoy and take for granted, celebrate that we are able to freely
gather, to say what we think, to write what we please and to go virtually
anywhere. Lastly, remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice
and gave their lives, their limbs and their health so that we may continue
to have and enjoy these freedoms of which others can only dream.
New Members Night was a big success with 11 of 14 new members attending.
Capt. Steve Stearns, mate Laurie and crew, put on a beautifully set and
very delicious fondue evening. P/C Bob Wheeler left a sick bed to put up
a very informative BYC history display and Linda Ritter did likewise on
Skipperette history. Thanks to you all for a wonderful night.
On December 1st, we have the opportunity to do something else that is
uniquely American - helping others less fortunate. It is
Special Peoples
Day at BYC. We scramble for boats each year to accommodate the growing
numbers of Special People. A few simple decorations inside your boat and
a few hours of your time is all that is needed to put a smile on the faces
of those who daily have to deal with physical and/or mental disabilities.
Give them something pleasant to remember this holiday season. Let Capt.
Mike Leedy know you'll be there with your boat to help out this year.
The following weekend, December 6th and 7th, is the annual Lighted Boats
Parade. This is BYC's best known community oriented event of the year.
If any one thing brings our club good public relations during the year,
this is it. Please consider decorating your boat and come out with us this
year. Bring friends and family and have a good time to boot.
December 15 is the Annual Christmas Dinner. This is your opportunity
to see your bridge, flag officers and executive committee serve up a scrumptious
Christmas turkey dinner. Fortunately for all of us, our spouses prepare
it. This is one not to miss as Santa makes a special early appearance just
for us.
Lastly, finish off 2002 with celebration at the New Years Eve Dinner
Dance. A flyer should be in this issue and sign up sheet in the lounge.
Gerri and I would like to take this time to offer our warmest wishes
to you and yours for a joyous and safe holiday season.

The IPBA race session for 2002 is over, with the Port Orchard
Yacht Club Fall Roundup completing on October 12th. The race was a lot
of fun, and BYC toke home it's fair share of trophies. We had eight boats
of the 30 entered, and took home six trophies as follows:
2nd Overall - P/C Leo Longenecker in Reality Check with a .7009 % error,
1st Class 1 - Owen Ritter in Outbound with a .9725% error.
2nd Class 1 - Chuck Silvernail in Solmar with a 1.8449% error
1st Class 2 - P/C Mike Henry in Peachy Keen with a 1.0718% error.
3rd Class 2 - John Rosendale in Mistic Blue with a 1.2545% error.
2nd Class 3 - Jack Hensley in Jubilee with a 1.4991% error.
Three skippers from BYC headed south on October 5th to take on the IPBA
South Tacoma-Olympia Challenge log race, and found the 5kt plus currents
in the Tacoma Narrows to be quite the challenge. They did however bring
home some hardware as follows:
3rd Overall - Jack Hensley in Jubilee with a 2.2511% error.
1st Class 1 - Owen Ritter in Outbound with a 2.5561% error.
1st Class 3 - P/C Mike Henry in Peachy Keen with a 2.3787% error.
Seattle Yacht Club's Stimson Trophy Race was held on September 21st
with five of the 30 boats entered from BYC. This year it was a Western
Roundup theme and BYC got the awards for best dressed individual [who? (gk)],
club
participation, and best dressed boat [name? (gk)]. We also won a
few trophies as follows:
2nd Class 1 - Chuck Silvernail on Solmar with a 1.9444% error.
2nd Class 2 - Mike Leedy on Sea Trust II with a 2.3887% error.
3rd Class 3 - Jack Hensley on Jubilee with a 2.2297% error.
On Sunday, November 10th will be the BYC Past Commodores Cup race. This
is a club race open to all club members with an interest in log racing.
This is kind of a "get ready for Heavy Weather" type of race only shorter,
and is always followed with a super potluck dinner. The logs include a
small chart showing the distance and true courses used for layout of the
contest. Logs are at the clubhouse store. Try to make this one, and remember
that Log Racing is a Social Event!

The web team is looking for artwork to help spruce up the web
page. Looking for photos of the clubhouse or other artwork that could be
used at the top level of the web page to show some important aspect of
BYC. Paper or electronic artwork is acceptable.
Also, a reminder that we are looking for volunteers for working on the
web page. If you would be interested in learning more about HTML or how
to setup and modify web pages, contact bycwebteam@bremertonyachtclub.org
We are also looking for people that might be interested in scanning or
typing in some of the paper history of BYC suitable for web access or other
electronic storage of the club history.
If you like messing around with the computer, this can be a nice way
to earn points. A lot cleaner work than scrapping barnacles...
Just a reminder to check the web page for upcoming events, and if you
want to add something to the web page, contact the web team via the web
page. www.bremertonyachtclub.org We've had a lot of favorable comments,
and I want to keep it that way by making sure the web page is current and
relevant to members of the community.
Also, for those members that had email via @home, please contact daveu@sptddog.com
to let me know your new email address. I am already collecting email addresses
for next years annual.
