2008 Race Book [doc]

Final 2008 WSSA Series Spreadsheet
Posted: 28 June 2008

28 June: (Last Race) Port Orchard Invitational

..."Great day to be on the water! Winds were 10 to 15 knots at the start to 5 to 8 knots at the finish. While not everyone was happy with their finish position, there were no negatives directed at the sunny and warm weather. The end of series Awards dinner was well attended, and the lasagna dinner provided by Spiros Restaurant in Gig Harbor was great."

19 June: "A survey of the WSSA Club representatives has determined that the 2008 Port Madison/WSSA race should be dropped from consideration in determining WSSA Series standings."

June 7: Brownsville Invitational Race: "Very light air start after a long postponement, with a nice breeze late in the race to bring the fleet home on a shortened course. This helped the slower boats to correct out higher than they expected earlier in the race."

May 17: Blake Island: "A light wind got most competitors well into Rich Passage before the tide changed. There was a distinct wind shear to the breeze even after it seemed to fill all the way out to Blake Island. After rounding Blake Island a steady (and on occasion strong) wind took the racers to the shortened course finish off Orchard Point."

April 28: "We had the fourth race in the 2008 WSSA Series last Saturday, April 26th, the Poulsbo Invitational. Light winds and a convergence zone moving through the area made for a slow race which was shortened at the University Point mark."

April 05, 2008 8:57 PM: "The Rich Passage Ramble is completed. Good to great winds for the day, 5 to 15 kts. Cold, with light sprinkles at times late in the race. Few tactical moves possible, but there were some big gains to be made if you made the right ones."

15 March: POYC Spring Shakedown [Rec & posted: 15 March]
"Light, shifty winds spread the fleet, with showers late in the race . Wind shifted from the SW to NE over the course of the race. Not a very tactical race, but all boats were able to finish."

23 February: Port Madison: West Sound Invitational
Received & posted: 25 February. Revised: 28 February
"The sun was out all day and the winds varied from 5 to 12 knots, making for a fine day to be out sailing.
A couple of protests involving Mark Z were disallowed by the PMYC Protest Committee."

2007 Series Results
(after last race [Blake Island])

  • Blake Island Race Results

  • Saturday morning Bremerton Yacht Club hosted their 37th annual Blake Island Race, the final race of the West Sound Sailing Association (WSSA) Series. Sailboats from Port Madison, Poulsbo, Port Orchard, West Sound Corinthian, and Bremerton Yacht Clubs have been participating in the seven race series since February.

Winds were light for this race, making the trip from Bremerton out and around Blake Island slow this year. The race was shortened to 12.5 miles with a finish off Orchard Point by the Manchester Fuel Depot.

Winner of the cruising division was Kelly Foust (POYC) on CASTAWAY. Second was Wendell Crim (WSCYC) on AU VENT.

Winner of Division II was EMERALD LADY sailed by Tom and Eileen Barrett (WSCYC). Second was Jim Richmond's WHISPER, and third was ALDEBARAN, Ole Hovland (POYC).

Division I sailboats took all the top overall places, with Dan Wierman (WSCYC) on GREAT WHITE slipping past Ron Martin's SWEETSPOT (POYC) at the finish line to take 1st place. Third place went to John Mitchell (BYC) aboard his VIGILANT.

Following the race, the annual WSSA awards dinner was held at Port Orchard Yacht Club. Series overall awards were presented to Tom Barrett for third place, Matthew Gardner-Brown (WSCYC) on DULCINEA for 2nd and Dan Wierman for first. Dan also received the Sailor of the Year perpetual award, making this his fifth time receiving that honor in the 30 years the Series has been contested.
