YOUTH SAILING UPDATE

6 July 2007 -- Our annual sailing camps have begun.

We have a great staff with Instructor Jeff Traylor and Erik Danielsen and two willing helpers. While the registration list to-date is kind of disappointing, the kids are having lots of fun and learning to sail.

The first few days are always a little trying as we find out the things we should have done and didn't get around to. One such example concerns a 5 HP outboard we have been using since the program began. This motor has been a favorite with the staff because it almost always starts on the first pull.

Not so, Sunday afternoon. I exhausted my meager bag of outboard tricks and it ended up at Aqua-Tech. Now think about this. It is the 2nd of July and I want them to fix a motor. Instead of "take a number, and we'll fit it in week after next". Shelley called late Tuesday and told me it was ready. Now that's service. They have been very supportive of our sailing program all along, so don't try this at home. Nevertheless, if you have Mercury motor problems, they offer great service and fair prices.

Summer must be here, because we always seem to end the day with wet kids.

Tell your friends about the program. We have room in all the classes except for the 9-13 and 23 - 27 July classes.

Blogging Sites for Sailors

Hello

My name is Kay Harrison, I am a local writer that has recently taken up sailing. When I first became interested in sailing, I looked for a local internet sailing blog where I might be able to read about and get comments from both beginner and expert sailors, but I wasn’t able to find one. So I have created one in which I will journal my progress in learning to sail. I am hoping to get a few experienced sailors reading my blog and giving comments and advise, not only for me, but for other beginning sailors as well.

Sailing is so different from other outdoor activities. There is so much more to learn than there is to mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, and most other outdoor sports. The terminology, equipment, techniques, and history of sailing can seem overwhelming to the beginner. So I thought I’d journal my experiences, and encourage other sailors, beginner and expert to share their experiences.

So I’m writing to ask if you might be willing to share my blog site with members of your club, perhaps in a newsletter or on a bulletin board. Knowing how busy people are, I think that if I can get the word out to a few hundred people, I might get 5 or 10 who will read and comment regularly! The site is called Evolution Of A Sailor and the site address is evolutionofasailor.blogspot.com/. Please take a few minutes to look at it. I’d love to know what you think.

One thing I have already learned about sailing is that it is more of a lifestyle than a sport. It hooks you, reels you in, and you are changed forever.

Thank you,

Kay Harrison

Pelican Brief (15 May 2007)

Sam Throm

A flock of 10 San Francisco Bay Pelicans took advantage of fair winds in Pelican Bay for a nice day of competitive sailing. Launching at Lions park ramp on Saturday we rode the flood tide to Phinney Bay and waited for the afternoon wind. At 1200 a south breeze filled in and we were able to sail 4 short course races in winds from 4 to 12 knots.

The course was set near the north end of the bay putting the Silverdale bound current into the racing strategy and with local knowledge I thought I might have an advantage. It was not to be, however, as I was outsailed by several older and more experienced skippers. Jean and Dave Gosse in Chop-Chop and Howard White in Spirit both in their late 70's challenged for the lead but at the end of the day it was Robert Kotovic in Thistledew that carried away the top prize.

After an early mother's day breakfast and the likelyhood of very light morning wind we rigged our boats and set a course from BYC to the Traceyton boat launch for one last race. The 2.4 kt current and light south wind pushed us quickly to the finish line to end a fine weekend.

Lurie Huntington, race captain of the Viking Fleet 3, extends her thanks to BYC and Rear Commadore Mike Dunn for allowing us to leave our boats at the club Saturday night. That allowed us to extend the racing to later in the afternoon and put us in a nice position for the final race on Sunday without an extra haulout and launch.

VIKINGS TO INVADE BYC

Viking fleet #3 of the San Francisco Pelican sailing class (pdf) are coming to Phinney Bay on May 12th and 13th to hold a weekend regatta. The Annual regatta, held for the last 12 years in Sequim Bay, will move south this year. San Francisco Bay Pelicans are popular 12' Heavy weather dinghys designed in the 50's by Capt. William H. Short, a retired tugboat captain for winter sailing on the "Bay". The Pelican's balanced lug rig with colorful sails on a beamy 12' pram shaped hull are unusual but practical for the strong winter winds. Barb and Sam Throm will be hosting the regatta and will be seen sailing "Pegasus" (Look for a blue and yellow sail).

The boats will launch at Lions field ramp and will sail to Phinney bay for racing. Please feel free to come down to the maintenance dock, for a close look at the boats. Many of the sailors are seniors and some of the best skippers are in their 70's. 3 or 4 races will be run on Saturday and perhaps 2 on Sunday.

YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM EXPANDED FOR 2007

BYC Youth Sailing Page

For the 2007 season we have more boats to work with than we have had in the past. In addition to the seven Dewitt Dinghies we have used since we began the program, we now also have six Laser sailboats. The Lasers are bigger and faster than the DeWitts and can accommodate taller sailors. The additional Lasers give the program greater flexibility.

We will offer classes for intermediate along with beginning sailors for each of the six weeks. The season begins on the second of July and ends on the tenth of August. Additional staff (compared to previous seasons) will be available to ensure that all the sailors receive first rate instruction in the classroom and on the water.

Capt. Sam Throm has volunteered to teach a class for adult sailors during the month of June. These lessons are tentatively planned for Wednesday evenings and will run from 6 PM to 8:30 PM starting on the 6th and ending on the 27th. Cost for the class will be $50 per person for the four evenings. If you (or someone you know) are interested in learning to sail, contact Sam Throm at 908-0427 or Mike Knight at 509-9295. The class will use Lasers and have at least one lesson on a larger cruising sailboat. Since this is the first time we do this and since it is for adults, we will have a meeting for all students on the 23rd of May to discuss the course schedule and content and will make every effort to tailor the lessons to the desires of the class.

Another change for this season is that there will be a discount for those who sign their kids up before the 15th of May. Classes are $195. Early sign -ups pay only $185 so plan early if you can this year.

Minto Owners Unite! and go sailing!

We received this Email (Friday, February 16, 2007) from Mike Ellis, the owner of Rich Passage Boats and the maker of the "Rich Passage Minto" a dinghy which most of us oldtimers still know (and own!) as the "Ranger Minto" (and the only dinghy which rows, motors and sails splendidly!):

So you don't say I didn't give you enough advance notice to get your BYC Minto owners motivated, there are two Minto Events scheduled so far for this summer. The Three Tree Point Yacht Club will be hosting the Minto Mingle at Dockton Park on Vashon Island 23-24 June (all Minto owners are welcome), and I will be holding the Minto Regatta in Port Orchard on 9 June. Information is on the Rich Passage Boats web site http://www.richpassage.com/ on the Minto Events page.

Leukemia Cup, Sponsors/Pledges Wanted

Tom and Eileen Barrett are entering this year’s Leukemia Cup Regatta
sailing Emerald Lady. This is the second consecutive year we have entered
the regatta. We have attached last years picture Emerald Lady. Last
year, the winds were light and we finished within five minutes of the time
limit. We are hoping for stronger winds this year.

The local Leukemia Cup is part of a nationwide race-for charity series
that raises money for research for a cure for Leukemia and other blood
cancers.

At this time, S/V Emerald Lady and her crew are asking that you sponsor
them in their efforts. We ask that you contact us with your name and phone
number at (360) 769-8303 or email, tbarrett@oz.net. Pledges may also be
made on line at:
http://www.active.com/donate/2006regatta/lcrwaTBarret. In
addition, more information about the Cup and the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society is obtainable at the web site.

Individual pledges may be of any amount while commercial sponsorships have
a minimum pledge. Commercial sponsorships of $500 will receive advertising
during the event.

Please help us with our campaign. Thank you. None of the monies pledged
will go to Emerald Lady or crew.
