The month of January offers one more club race as a warmer-upper for our Heavy Weather Navigation Contest. On Sunday afternoon, Jan 21, we'll run the BYC Thompson Trophy Race. It'll be a short course but, just long enough to let you dial in your boat in readiness for Heavy Weather. Course descriptions will be in the race box during the first week of Jan. The famous "log racers potluck" will follow to which everyone is invited, whether or not you raced that day. The experienced log racers of BYC are eagerly awaiting requests for assistance from first-time and novice racers. Look them us, please.

January is also the start of the International Power Boat Association's 2007 race schedule. First contest up is on the weekend of Jan 12-14 which is Queen City YC's First of the Season Race held out of the QCYC main clubhouse in Seattle on Portage Bay. The race will be run on Lake Washington on Saturday and is nicely shortened to only 14 miles. Their weekend of events starts Friday evening with a QCYC Friday Night Social. Full breakfasts will be available both Saturday and Sunday mornings with the awards banquet featured Saturday evening. QCYC hosts a really nice Social Event Weekend. QCYC always sends a large team of contestants to Heavy Weather; it's only right that we have a good group going to their race. Details of their race can be found on the IPBA website at www.ipbalogracing.org under "Coming Events".

In February, we (BYC) host what is still hanging in there as the largest log race of the season, nationally, that being the Heavy Weather Navigation Contest. This will be the 73rd running of the race, which has so much history behind it. While reviewing the written history of log racing at BYC, it was apparent to me that there were times when our long-ago members considered it one of their club duties to maximize BYC representation in our race. Some of their names were seen only on the Heavy Weather Race list of contestants and not in other IPBA races since they knew that BYC's reputation was, in large part, based on the success of Heavy Weather, participation-wise. That still applies today. Our experienced racers are ready to reveal their secrets and even take you for a boat ride to show you how our sport works.

Membership in the BYC family is a social experience and log racing for BYC is a great way to enhance that experience.
