At the General Meeting of 18 December 2006, Brian Golden had to report the sad story of substantial damage to our beloved Oro Bay Outstation caused by the Big Storm of 14 December.... The photos he used for his slide show were taken by Donna Golden....

The water system was damaged - and is not functional and may not be for some time.

#13
Although the docks did not sustain damage the electrical is not available until the underground access can be checked for damage caused by an uprooted tree that damaged the cement walkway to the dock and moved the earth underneath - and may have damaged the underground placement of the electrical line.

#14
The road to the Outstation looked like a war zone with trees down and blocking in several areas. Bryan and Donna are also without power and don't know when it will be restored. He has been authorized to do whatever is necessary to keep the downed and dangling trees from causing more damage to ours and neighboring properties.

** According to Mike Henry, the Oro Bay Outstation started out with over 100 trees. The Big Storm of December 2006 took out thirteen. Now there are 54 left (as presented to the General Meeting of 15 January 2007)

"Wood That I Could"

Text & Photos by PC Bob Wheeler

"It was a dark and stormy night" someone once wrote and the day following was about the same. Winds peaked at about 100 MPH that December 2006 day at Oro Bay. The destruction is well documented on the website and you might want to take a step back in time to refresh your memory.

13 large trees were knocked down in the storm and subsequently cut up and stacked ready for splitting by P/Cs Mike Henry and Larry Reierson and Captains Owen Ritter, Leroy Armstrong, Steve Brett, Jim Bixler (Honorary Member), Gene Paxton, Dan Robinson and Bryan Golden. Additional clearing and clean-up was accomplished by these folks too.

The property was further cleaned up and made ready for the annual Memorial Day cruise-in too. Much of the old wood which had been sitting around since '94 was gathered up by the Anderson Island Fire Dept and distributed to some of the Island residents in need. Once all the newly fallen trees were split and stacked, we would have enough fire wood to last for a long, long time.

And so it came to pass, that a few of us were tied to the dock the first week of Aug. thinking of crabbing, fishing and just goofing off when lo and behold a hydraulic log splitter shows up.
An industrious team of log splitters, Captains Tim Stiles, Mike Leedy and Bill Harris began building a small mountain of split wood.

Then the call came out: "we need stackers". Shortly thereafter two most industrious and perhaps improbable folks in the form of Patty Stiles and Jytte Wheeler sprang to action (I took pictures).
Working like demons, these two petite pieces of energy packed and stacked every stick and policed the area to boot! The pictures tell it all.

So the next time you throw a log on the fire at Oro Bay, remember the hard work of your fellow members and enjoy the warmth.
