Penny and I send our personal thanks to all of you for all your efforts and support this past [Heavy Weather] weekend. It certainly was a huge undertaking but at the same time a huge success! I have received many wonderful comments from my counterparts and visitors from other clubs. It is truly an honor to be part of such a great team!

Heavy Weather Reports from the BYC Bridge:

Commodore:
As I rush to complete this Towline article on the afternoon of the Heavy Weather Breakfast, I again stand in awe of what this club can accomplish. What a fantastic weekend! I want to express my personal thanks to all of our members who worked so hard to make this event such a huge success. Starting with the Work Party the week before to the Wine Tasting on Friday night, to the Luau Dinner, Hawaiian dance group and skit competition, and to the navigation contest, Evening in Tuscany Dinner, awards ceremony and the Monday breakfast, it went off almost without a hitch. The junior bridge officers and event chair persons did a magnificent job of coordination in making it all come together. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can improve this event in the future, please contact any of the bridge officers. This is your club and this is our most important event of the year and we want to do it right. As a side comment, BYC won the coveted Heavy Weather Skit trophy for the very first time, thanks to the efforts of CAPT McStay and his crew, and the Navigation Contest Team Trophy much to the dismay of our brothers from Queen City Yacht Club. Vice Commodore:
As Heavy Weather Weekend and the Brem-Aloha come to a conclusion, I am in awe and admiration to the participants who exceeded all my expectations. The weekend was a marathon of laughter, social events, great food and friends and of course, who can forget predicted log racing. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the committee Chairs and members and Spouses who worked so hard and gave so much of their time and energies well beyond their assigned tasks.

I would also like to acknowledge those who have toiled away over the last weeks and months behind the scenes to get ready for this weekend. The Webteam and Sylvia are now working to preserve the memory of this event so we can remember and reflect on all that unfolded over the weekend.

I wish I had room in this column to list every single member and their contributions that made this weekend turn out to be such a successful and memorable event. These members and Spouses are consistently and tirelessly stepping up to the plate again and again in order to ensure the success of this Club, these faithful Captains and Mates are working their hearts out to provide you with a fully functioning Club House, Marina, Boat Repair and Maintenance Facility.

I would be remiss however if I didn't specifically acknowledge the Heavy Weather Social Committee Chairs and Committee members. There wasn't a time when I didn't see you smiling and having a ball, even when you worked morning until night to assure everyone was welcomed and well nourished. Captain Andy Kupp and first mate Nancy proved once again that they are the King and Queen of Wine Tastings and many walked away with prizes from the Raffle. Thanks guys! An enormous Thank you goes out to Captain Mike Ryan and his First Mate Mona Lisa Ryan and all of the Crew for the spectacular Luau Dinner extravaganza. M/C Lisa shined in a beautiful authentic Hawaiian gown as she presided over a crew that served up a succulent roast pig procured by first mate Donna Park from Seattle's International District. The dinner included all of the trimmings and not a detail was left undone. No one went hungry - that's for sure. After the fabulous meal, coconut cream dessert and secret Tiki Tiki punch we could have all gone home happy, but there was more - much more: Next came the Hawaiian Dancers in full Polynesian Costumes. The group was composed of all ages, the youngest dancers were age 5 and this was a real family affair comprised of talent and skill and executed with real Hawaiian flair.

Tacoma Yacht Club took home the newly introduced 1st Runner Up Perpetual Skit Bremello Trophy. Thank you to TYC members for your participation. The extremely talented Captain Kevin McStay and First Mate Lori orchestrated and starred in the Skit that won BYC First Prize - the long anticipated and never won (by this club) Rubber Clam Gun. The evening was topped off by the music of Mixed Blend as we danced the night away. As for the Heavy Weather Race, I would like to thank everyone who participated and gave us a wonderful occasion to gather with boaters all across Puget Sound.

Thank you to President Geri Bachmen and the Skipperettes for going all out to provide such a delicious meal, for an Evening in Tuscany - Graci!

Breakfast on Monday Chaired by Capt. Dave and Sheila Miller was the perfect close to a weekend that will always be remembered. Thanks to all of our guests and observers during the weekend for participating and sharing such a fun weekend with us. [Source]

Thanks to Capt. Bill Underdown for serenading us between setups.
Rear Commodore:
Another sure sign that the Winter is almost over is that we have now held the 73rd running of the BYC Heavy Weather Log Race. And what a weekend it was! For anyone not fortunate enough to make it to the Saturday night's Brem-a-loha Luau, you missed out - Big Time! A real great "5-Rum Punch" and wine social hour set the stage for the evening. The Luau Cuisine, featuring a Whole Roast Pig, and served to an overflow crowd, made for a Hawaiian dinner that was truly Superb. While we were still savoring the delights of the Luau, we were treated to the absolutely finest performance of Hawaiian dancing any of us I spoke to had ever seen, despite the combined numerous visits to Captain Cook's Sandwich Islands. Mike and Mona Lisa Ryan treated us to a spectacularly talented "Authentic Hawaiian Dance Troupe", with dancers ranging from about age four to fourteen. The grace, precision, and the beauty of their performances kept each and every spectator completely enthralled throughout a wide variety of different Island Dance renditions. Believe it or not, that was only the early part of the evening. Still to come were the Club Skits and dancing to the Live Band. However, to avoid repetition, I'll leave the telling of the "Rest of the Story" to others.

  • Guess who won the Rubber Gun Trophy for the 1st Time?

    Ahoy friends,

As many of you know, the fabled Rubber Clam Gun has finally found its way
home! As the persons rumored to be most responsible for this travesty,
Lori and I would like to take a few moments to blame Charlie Billings,
Mike Henry, Jack Hensley, Andy and Nancy Kupp and John and Denise
Rosendale for making us do it. Seriously though, we could not have
pulled of the win without their time and talents and what is more, we
have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them all during our “rehearsals”.
I also want to say a very special thank you to Mike and Mona Lisa Ryan
whose decorative and culinary contributions transformed the club into a
“hula-friendly-zone”, and to Vice Commodore Don Hardgrove whose vision of
the “Brema-Loha-Hula” set us off in a direction we never would have taken
    otherwise!

We are very glad we came to join you folks and we look forward to getting
to know even more of you in the coming months…and I promise not to ask
anyone else to wear a bra. (Until next year that is!)

    Kevin McStay

Final Words from the Vice Commodore (16 March 2007):

With the sun shining, today, I am reminded of what a beautiful weekend we had for Heavy Weather Weekend. Spending the weekend with members and visitors from the Grand XIV clubs was really fun and something we are fortunate to have the opportunity to do every year. Boats, captains and family came in all through the weekend from Queen City, Tacoma, Day Island, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor and Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Clubs, among others. I am already looking forward to next year when hopefully we will have even greater participation. A big thank you goes to all who helped to make the weekend a big success. [Source]

    WINE & BREM-A-LOHA:

Heavy Weather Weekend at Bremerton Yacht Club will kick off on Friday evening, February 16, with a wine tasting party - perfect for some proper social and pre-racing attitude adjustment.

Following a continental breakfast in the clubhouse Saturday morning, the agenda for the rest of the day will focus on preparations for the evening's entertainment of skits to be performed by the visiting yacht clubs. This year's theme is "Brem-a-loha", which leaves far too much to the imagination.

Preceding the skit performances will be a social hour and the "Bremaluahula" with authentic Luau Cuisine. After-dinner entertainment begins with the visiting clubs performing their skits with their best thespian talents in the hopes of winning the infamous "Rubber Clam Gun Award".

Following the skit awards will be live music for your dancing pleasure to top the evening off.

    THE CONTEST: (see
top of this page for links to details and forms)

Sunday will see the running of the 73rd Annual BYC Heavy Weather Navigation Contest. Contest day will begin with morning check-in for the contestants and observer assignment (openings are available for more volunteer observers).

This year the course to be navigated will only be about 18 miles long and will allow for early finish times (before 1400 hours) for those wanting to return home on Sunday.

Those folks with high energy levels are invited to continue their weekend fun with another dinner Sunday evening which will be followed by the race awards and live music for even more dancing pleasure

The finishing touch for the Heavy Weather Weekend comes Monday morning when a full breakfast will be available in the clubhouse; just the thing to ready you for your trip back home. .

    SOME LOGISTICS:

For those arriving by boat, moorage will be available at BYC, as usual. For those desiring to view the "rebirth" of downtown Bremerton, moorage is available at the downtown public marina.

Heavy Weather Weekend information, schedules and registration forms will be available on the BYC website at www.bremertonyachtclub.org/hw/07 . (Mike Henry & Don Hardgrove)
