In Memoriam

With regret, we recognize the passing of Bremerton Yacht Club’s longtime member, Carl Wilhelm, on January 13, 2003. Carl joined BYC in 1952 and was introduced to the sport of log racing in 1954, obviously a very effective introduction. His first entry in the BYC Heavy Weather Race was in 1955. Carl’s log racing career was truly remarkable in that, although not winning it, he ran in 47 Heavy Weather races, missing only one, due to a last minute hospitalization.

Carl was also a regular participant in the old International Race back when the races were run nonstop from a starting point in Puget Sound and ending in the Gulf Islands. We all enjoyed his stories of starting at 0200 hours in order to finish at the scheduled time up north.

He was also a long time and active member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons.

Carl knew that when you called your last mark, that’s when the log racing fun really began. Well, Carl’s big race is over, whi h only means he’s had a head start at having fun at that really big log race up there. We’ll miss you, Carl.
