Reaching for the next trophy, the TYC
Commodore shook his head and muttered
something like “making something outta
nothin’!” that I held to the silent thought
that “it could be us!” The whoopin’ &
hollarin’ that erupted from our small
entourage matched our unexpected joy for
being recipients of the Commodore’s
Choice Trophy. Not bad for a crew that
expected nothing!
Many thanks go to those who
enthusiatially provided their time, energy,
and jokes in poor taste: Steve Brett, who
amongst other tasks, volunteered to zip
around in his dinghy with the big Gorilla
(VC Mike Dunn) to pick up any balloon
pieces that managed to break free; Deana
Brett, Abbey Dunn, Bev Bruins, and Jenny
Hardgrove, our clowns; RC Don Park for
playing Lion (even though he plays Tiger
much better!); ‘Lil John for being a great
helper with stretching out the balloons so
they could be inflated easier; Rob Bruins
for being a great sport, having a bunch of
animals and clowns aboard, and to his
temporary First Mate, Fleet Captain Mike
Ryan, for handling all the tasks large and
small as well as becoming the surprise
Jack-in-the-Box!
We all look forward to the next parade for
Opening Day, but realize that as decorated
boats go, the competition is great. We
really and truly have no expectations other
than to enjoy the day and not lose too many
balloons!

Here is an excellent message from the TYC Vice Commodore conveying
their appreciation of the BYC support (and Our Success) in
participating in the Daffodil parade.
Please check out the link to the Tacoma News Tribune Web site to see
their photo and caption of the BYC Float. I will try and get a copy of
the newspaper.

Mike and Abby,
Go to www.thenewstribune.com and click on photo gallery. They have
posted a wonderful picture of your decorated boat on their web site.
The picture also appeared on the front page of our Section B of the
paper today. You guys rock. Please tell your members how much we
appreciate them and all their work and enthusiasm. Your club really
give our event a big boost. You have our heartfelt thanks.
Don and Stella.
Daffodil Float
Theme: "Circus Side Show"
Skipper:
The theme for Daffodil this year is
“Carnival, a Parade and Circus”
and for Opening Day "Three Ring Circus".
The plan for the Daffodil float is to deck the boat out in bunting and
other decorations reminiscent of a circus tent, midway and side-show.
In addition, we will have a number of "circus side-show acts"
interacting on the boat, to include a giant and a tiny person, a
bearded lady, a strong-man, a sword swallower, etc.
Needs: Costumes, Decorations, Actors and Ideas. Please sign up in
the Clubhouse.
Official Websites:
With only two weeks to spare, Mr.
Fleet Captain and I proposed our simple
decorating idea to Rob Bruins with the
hope that he’d be agreeable to using Ocean
Pearl in the Tacoma Yacht Club’s Daffodil
Parade. It was a splendid time with a group
of volunteer members that worked together
wonderfully. Without any labor-intensive
set building, and expensive materials, we
agreed to use lots of color, by way of
balloons. Our goal was to have a presence
in the parade without expectations of
winning any type of award. Afterwards, at
the Awards Ceremony, the Power
Decorated Boat classification came up and
was awarded to another club. Our crew
exchanged looks, and nodded to the
repeated mantra that ‘We only wanted to
have a presence!”.

Balloon Artist: Donna Park
"Capt. Bruins presented the Commodore's Cup, won by the BYC Daffodil
Float Committee. He said that pictures of the boat are on the web page
and that the attendees all had a great time. Mona Lisa Ryan announced
that the Opening Day boat would have a similar theme."
(Minutes of
Business Meeting of 21 April 2008).
Rob Bruins'
yacht, Ocean Pearl, was the decorated boat at Daffodil.
