Galley Reminders, Requests, & Respect

Jo Carr, Chair (January 2009)

Every once in a while, folks need to be reminded just how important it is to keep our Galley clean and organized. Committee Chairs and their crew are responsible to completely clean up after their event. This is especially critical when, like the upcoming Heavy Weather Weekend, there will be multiple crews coming in throughout the weekend. Be respectful of others who will be coming in to use the Galley. When you use the pots, pans, and serving wear, everything must be thoroughly washed, dried and put away in its appropriate spot! Some drawers and cupboards are labeled, but if it’s not, don’t be timid about opening stuff up to see what’s already stored inside!

For those of you who do not know the purpose of the Scullery, it’s for the organized storage of our dinner and serving dishes as well as kitchen appliances, coffee urns, etc. It is not appropriate to bring in every conceivable plastic container or coffee can you can’t bear to part with but don’t want to toss away. Don’t store it in the Scullery in the event that ‘some committee’ will need it to store leftovers in. Please recycle those types of containers at home.

Committee members planning events that will require disposable, consumable products should check with me for items needed. We keep an inventory of dinner and snack plates, bowls, dinner napkins, as well as various sizes of hot and cold drink cups. I do my best to keep foil, zip lock baggies, and the like on hand also. If you desire a product I don’t normally stock, you should speak with me before purchasing the item so that we can agree on whose budget to deduct the items from. When dealing with leftovers you intend to freeze for another event, clearly label it with the current date and the Committee Chair’s name indicated. Items cannot be left in the freezer for six months!

The freezer will be defrosted the first week of the month. Items not marked and/or appearing freezer burned will be tossed. If you have stored food in the freezer and intend for another group to serve it up, please let folks know. No need to be wasteful! Like at home, if you take it out, put it back. If you drop something, pick it up. If you make a mess, clean it up!

I’ve heard positive remarks about the organization of the Galley and the continued cooperation and effort of all are much appreciated!
