Bob Wheeler: BYC's Ex-Historian
and Peripatetic Web Columnist

Bob Wheeler has been a BYC member since 1986. For the year 1994/1995 he served as Commodore. Before and after his service as bridge officer, Bob held countless other offices. Presently, he continues his involvement in BYC activities with functions and titles as diverse as "Cart Boy", "BYC Historian" (until 2006), and Chairman of the Oktoberfest Committee. At the regional level, Bob represents BYC on the Board of Directors of the RECREATIONAL BOATING ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON. In 2004, BYC's 75th anniversary, Bob spearheaded the systematic Web-based documentation of BYC's history. During the time of this historical work, Bob became an active contributor to the BYC Web effort, both as a photographer and as columnist; twice, he received the coveted "Virtual Golden Disk Award" [2004] [2005]. Below, we have begun to assemble the columns which he wrote during the past three years for the BYC Web page and the Towline.

Service to the Club

BYC is not a community service club as Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs are. As I understand it, members of these organizations give freely of their time and resources for the betterment of their community.

While we are not a community service oriented club, we do have several opportunities to act like one. These opportunities are imminent with the Christmas Season fast approaching. They are the Special People's Cruise and the Lighted Ship Parade. Each of these events requires some rather unselfish giving of time and resources by the membership.

In recent years, I have seen Service Points and gas credits given to Captains either as an enticement or reward or both for their participation. The appropriateness of this is arguable and I will yield to the Commodore's decision. However, I would ask each of us to look inward and make a conscious decision as to weather or not it is appropriate for us to accept.

If you are offered such things, you don't have to take them. This is one way to take ownership of your Club. Personally, if it takes gas money or a partial service point to get you to support these community events, you need to reevaluate your priorities. It's Christmas folks! Many members give of their time and resources well beyond the minimum and without any form of compensation. Why don't you consider being one of them this Christmas Season.
