Where did summer go?  I am writing the September article which means that the start of BYC regular meetings is just around the bend.  The first meeting of the fall year is scheduled for Sept. 17th at 7:30 PM. There are a lot of new issues that have come up during the summer that will be of interest to all members. Some issues may be controversial, so you all may want to attend and provide an opinion or the benefit of your experience.

It looks like the galley renovations have a good start. As you know, the work is being performed by work party time and many members have been away, enjoying the boating season. Capt Dale Armstrong is the project manager and is hoping for a lot of help as soon as the summer cruising season has slowed up. Please contact Dale and get your work party time in and allow for a quick completion of the galley.

Our Annual Committee is working very hard to publish in early fall. Please be helpful and make it easy for them to get your picture and information as soon as possible. It's going to be great!

September is hear and it is time for the annual boat/shed inspections by the float committee. During this month, I have asked the committee to check boats for current registration stickers, any apparent problems, and also to ensure the boat has been used in the past 6 months.  The shed will also be inspected, looking for chain in the water, proper flotation, and other problems areas as identified.  I am asking all boat and shed owners to do their own inspections and bring boats and sheds up to safe and required standard.

Shelley and I have moved over the summer and our new phone number is in the printed copy of the towline.  Moving after 20 years in one location was not fun.

Remember the theme for the coming year is to "do your share plus a little" and be positive with comments. Oh and lets not forget why we have a Yacht club and that is to promote the enjoyment of boating. Enjoy the summer and remember the next general meeting is September 17th

Where has the summer gone?  I feel like we hardly got started enjoying the weather when now it is about time to rake the leaves. While it has been relatively quiet around the club the past couple of months, the Picnics in the Park have been a grand success. Harry Davis' , American Graffiti, 50's Style; Al Gonzalez's Western BBQ, and the latest success in August - Mike and Abby Dunn's "Old Fashioned Picnic" have all been well attended. Mike tried to drown your Vice and Rear Commodore in his dunking tank just to make a statement. I think he went into the Mariners bullpen and found one young fellow with a laser scope on his arm. He put me in the water more times!

All that and the social season is just beginning! My most grateful thanks goes to Rod & Angela Perryman when they volunteered to take over the Salmon Bake from Norm Smith when he informed me he had a new job and that he would be unable to handle it. Remember the Salmon Bake is on Sunday, 9 Sept, don't forget to sign up soon.

David Wilson is encouraging everyone to bring all your treasures to the Swap Meet on Saturday, 29 Sept in the club's parking lot and trade them for someone else's junk. We have to keep these dust collectors in circulation.

The first Sunday Morning Breakfast will be held on 30 Sep. Leroy and Juanita Armstrong will be sure to have something delicious to fill your belly and an opportunity to just sit and socialize.

I am pleased to announce that the Kitsap Community Federal Credit Union has graciously donated $3000 to support the Special Peoples Cruise in December. KCFCU really lives up to their philosophy of "People Helping People" when they support this worthy cause. Their employees have again volunteered to assist by providing caregiver support on the boats. When you are in the credit union, please tell them how much we appreciate their support.

The Project Manager for the Pump Out Station, Ray Gorski, informed me that the contractor will be excavating for the holding tank starting in early September in the north parking lot. It will probably be only a few days, but will seem like months of inconvenience. Please bear with us. I know Ray will push the contractor to get him finished just as soon as possible.

On a different subject, but one you have heard before.  One morning early I received a call from "a concerned citizen", just a little irate to put it mildly. It seems he has a boat at the Port Washington Marina and "your yacht club boats" are causing all sorts of damage to his boat from the high wakes when passing the marina. I told him that we were not the only boaters that pass the marina as many boaters go past on their way to Silverdale. I also assured him that while we have no authority over the boaters in the Narrows we would make BYC members aware of the concerns. I also informed him that he should get the name of the boat and the number and notify the Coast Guard. I have to sympathize with him as I have been rocked severely by thoughtless boaters while traveling through that area. SLOW DOWN, MOVE AS FAR TO THE NORTH & EAST AS POSSIBLE, treat the area in front of the marina as a NO WAKE ZONE and give the boat owners a break.

Last month I mentioned that BYC would be hosting all the officers of the Grand XIV in early August. We had a great turnout with representatives from all clubs.  I received many thanks for the weekend and I was instructed by many of the attendees to express their appreciation to the members of the Bremerton Yacht Club in allowing them to come and enjoy our facilities. They have told me a hundred times (at least) what a great club we have. Nothing new to me. Thanks everyone for allowing us to host these fine folks!

Well, the mess has begun. If you've been back in the Chart Room lately you've seen it looks a little different. Walls are moving, lighting is changing, the chimney is gone and more. As the summer cruising season winds down progress should be picking up. Once the wiring, plumbing, sheet rocking, painting, and flooring are done then the contractor can come in to measure and manufacture the stainless tables and install the new dishwasher, etc. There is a lot of work to be done yet. Our list of volunteers can be counted on one hand. Step up, help out. The entire club will benefit from your contribution. Remember, it is YOUR club.

Going to the docks you will notice the gate lock is inoperative again, having failed for the second time in a month. Because of this and the ongoing problems with the card readers, the Executive Committee is presently reviewing the entire access security. More on this at a later date.

August will always be a memorable month for me. The first weekend into it BYC welcomed all the Officers of the Grand Fourteen for the Officers Cruise In. We managed to squeeze in 34 visiting boats on our docks, hopefully with no or little inconvenience to our members. This is an annual event when all the new Rear Commodores are welcomed, tasked, chided, and hazed into the ranks of the Grand Fourteen. It is
the marine version of pledging to a fraternity. It is also the time when the new Rears get to choose a name for themselves, so henceforth and forevermore we will be known as the Lightkeepers of the Grand Fourteen. It was a wonderful weekend, Gerri and I met lots of neat people, by Sunday we were exhausted, and the new Rears are already looking forward to next year so we can appropriately welcome in the next Rears.

Hope your summer is going well. See you on the docks.

It is not too early to start thinking about how you can get involved and help the club out next year (not to mention earn a few extra points). The Vice Commodore and I will be looking for next years Towline Editor.  Few skills are involved, or I wouldn't have been able to do it. It just takes a little time each month and I can show you the ropes to get you started. It's a very rewarding way to get to to know the club, its functions, and its members.  If you are interested, contact Vice Commodore Bill Rumbold, or Captain Mike Thomas

Galley Remodel
CALLING ALL MEMBERS!!! Knowledgeable craftsmen, guys with framing know how, and those that need to earn work party time!!!! Captain Dale Armstrong desperately needs your skills to get the galley remodel project completed.  He needs people with knowledge to supervise various stages of the project and worker bees to do the work. The club NEEDS EVERYONE to step up and help with this project. The season of heavy galley usage use is just around the corner. Please contact Dale Armstrong or Bob Bachman to find out what you can do to help get the galley remodel completed

I want to thank people that have sent me their email address or confirmed an email address for the annual. I can't guarantee including any more more submissions for this years annual, but feel free to send me email addresses for next years annual, and for the membership committee. Over time, we should be able to build a reasonably complete list of members email, for those that want to contact other members electronically.

The web page is moving along. There have been no problems with the location http://bremertonyachtclub.org. Telebyte.com has been very pleasant to work with on configuring and hosting the web site. We've been including each month's towline articles on the web.  Still looking for reporters and other people that have something to say about the club or events. If you attend an event and want to post a review or if you some information that would be of interest to other boaters in the area, send it in to webteam@bremertonyachtclub.org.  If your committee wants an bremertonyachtclub.org alias, or a page giving information about what your committee is doing, let me know.

I'm looking into a "members only" section of the page. I'll keep you posted on progress there. If you have suggestions for "members only" information, or want to be notified via email when it is up and how you can access, let me know.

Thanks,
Captain Dave Uebele
Technology Chairman

BYC Annual Update

The annual deadline is fast approaching. We still need pictures--PLEASE! If you know you don't have your picture in last years annual and we haven't taken a picture this year this year, contact me and I will arrange to have it taken. One way or another I'll get your picture. So please help me out.  Annual committee members will be at Oro bay for labor day the club: Sept 8, 6-8 PM, the club before and after the first general meeting, and at the Salmon bake. Please show up, and have your picture taken.

Thanks,
Captain Mike Thomas
