GOD BLESS AMERICA! Shelley and I wish to express our
deep sorrow in the loss of American life by the terrorist attack. Americans
are a strong people and we shall prevail.
An update on our outstation situation finds that Pierce County has not
yet responded to our written request to petition the hearing examiner for
a modification to our permit. Pierce County determined after 8 years, that
BYC should be limited to 13 boats at a time at our outstation. We had no
limitation on the number of boats in the original determination.
I will keep you posted as this situation develops.
The Executive Committee has recently had discussions regarding requirements
for being a sponsor for a new member application. It has been the unanimous
decision that both sponsors must know the applicant well enough to personally
vouch for him/her. Prospective sponsors to be advised that applications
may be rejected if only one sponsor knows the candidate. We need to re-establish
our required process.
BYC has a requirement to schedule fueling appointments in advance. Please
be courteous and do not appear during the dinner hour requesting fuel with
little to no advance notice. Call the store and schedule the fuel appointments
in advance! Failure to do so may result in a substantial delay in your
fueling.
Capt. Dale Armstrong has started the galley upgrades and has now turned
the project over to Capt. Morris for completion. As you know, the work
is to be done by work party time to save money. Now its time to call Capt.
Morris and put in some work time. We must quickly complete this project.
Without adequate help and soon, we may have to pay a contractor to complete
the project. Thanks Capt. Armstrong for the great kickoff on the project.
"Do your share plus a little" and always be positive.

Awesome Ospreys
From: Bill Rumbold, Vice Commodore
September 11, 2001, a day that I shall always remember. A day
that evokes extremely strong emotions in me every time I see events on
TV and every time I think about it or talk about it. My heart goes out
to the thousands that lost their lives and those that lost loved ones and
friends. I know that there are many of you that have experienced some loss
as a result of that horrific event. Please accept my condolences. The other
side of my emotions is an extreme hatred for those criminals that caused
such a terrible event. They must be caught and punished severely.
I have asked myself what can I as an individual do and my answer is to
provide support. Support for those that lost loved ones; support for our
great country and support for our leaders that will have to make the right
and hard decisions. I hope that you all can do the same. Commodore Conrad
set the theme for this year for the club as "Do your share, plus a little".
Now is the time.
I have found it hard to sit down to write this article and to talk about
social stuff around the club or the running of the club, but life goes
on.
The salmon bake on September 9 was a huge success. My thanks to Rod
Perryman and his great committee for a great job well done.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, David Wilson is chairing the Swap meet
in the parking lot from 0830 until 1300. Bring your trash and turn it into
cash and someone else's treasure. From his advertising blitz we should
have a good turnout of buyers.
Leroy Armstrong is chairing the first Sunday morning breakfast
on 30 Sept. from 0900 to 1030. Come and enjoy a great breakfast. You
all know who the real cook in the kitchen is - Juanita.
We start October off with an Octoberfest on Friday, 5 Oct. chaired
by PC Bob Wheeler. As he says, you will be there and you will have
fun!

Summer is on the wane. The last of the Club long range cruisers
have returned just the other day so it must be. As we get set for the fall
what better way to start it off than by signing up for the upcoming WORK
PARTY on October 6 and 7. Required time this year is 8 hours so sign up
now. Get your time in, get a hearty hot lunch and it's all free. What a
deal! Work Party Co-chairs, Capt. Terry Stevens and Capt. Steve Stearns
will be glad to have you. They've been working on their project lists in
anticipation.
Speaking of projects, things have been happening around the clubhouse.
The north men's head has been nicely redone along with painting of the
north entrance interior and new lighting in the west entrance. These, plus
some other upcoming improvements are the handiwork of a crew of Skipperettes
led by Estelle Hamling. Many thanks ladies for your work.
The galley project is well under way as evidenced by the white footprints
throughout the clubhouse because of the sheetrocking. I would like to thank
Capt. Dale Armstrong for all his hard work. Dale was instrumental in getting
the project off the ground. The project can still use helpers and it will
count towards your work party time. See Capt. Lewie Morris and get involved.
By now you've probably noticed the big hole in the north parking lot.
That's the home of the holding tanks for our new pumpout system. Capt.
Ray Gorski has things well in hand there and we should see it in operation
in the not too distant future.
Last. Please keep in your thoughts and prayers the victims and their
grieving families of those senseless, evil acts back east. Help in some
way if you can.

I would like to thank Captain Rosendale for his submission
of A Tribute to the United States. I think you will find it a timely
and intuitive observation by one of our neighbors to the North.
Read it and feel proud. I know I did.

Workout your Blues
In many cases, exercise works as well as drugs in treating depression.
Psychologists and exercise physiologists have suspected that exercise can
beat the blues. Now a study from Duke University proves it. Researchers
recruited 156 men and women aged 50 and over who suffered from major depression.
One third of them were put on a regimen of walking of jogging 30 minutes,
three days a week. Another third took the antidepressant Zoloft.
The others did both exercise and the drug therapy.
Though the groups that took the medicine began to show improvement sooner,
by the end of the four month long study, all three groups had made remarkable
improvement. "exercise is a viable alternative to drugs" says lead researcher
James Blumenthal. "It may not be for everybody, but if a patient's motivated,
the chances of beating depression may actually be better."
Exercise, like drug therapy, must be an ongoing routine. After six months
the researchers rechecked the patients. Of those doing a combination of
exercise and and drug therapy, 31 percent had fallen back into depression,
of the drug therapy only group, 38 percent had relapsed. In the exercise
only group, only 8 percent saw their symptoms return.

BYC Web Project
My thoughts go out to members of the club and the community
affected by the attack on the WTC, both currently and possibly in the future.
With the possibility of military action looming ahead of us, more members
of our community may soon be in harms way. I hope for a resolution
as fair and non-violent as possible. We need to be supportive of all americans,
and supportive of actions taken in the future to resolve this issue. We
need also to be aware of the concerns of the military as we boat in Sinclair
inlet and other areas with naval facilities.
The web project continues along. We have the basic framework.
Now we need your help and suggestions to make the BYC web page even more
helpful and useful, both to club members and interested outside parties.
If you have information that could be useful for the web page, please forward
to: webteam@bremertonyachtclub.org.
I try to include towline articles in the web page as well. If you are submitting
a towline article electronically, please send a copy to the webteam as
well.
The 2001-2002 annual project is wrapping up. We've tried to make sure
that all pictures submitted are used, and contact information is correct.
We've also thought about making copies of the annual available electronically,
on cd-rom. No promises at this point, but if you are interested,
contact me or the annual
committee. Possible formats would be MS Publisher, MS word, or
html. Not perhaps as pretty as the printed copy, but could be a nice backup
copy.
Thanks,
