Towline Articles for June 2001:
From:  Keith Conrad, Commodore
Installation has passed and now life can  return to normal. I am privileged and  honored to be the 74th commodore of the  Bremerton yacht club, following a long-standing tradition. My theme for the  coming year is to "do your share plus a  little". Also to be positive as positive  thoughts and ideas are of value and can  be used to achieve our goals. Oh and lets  not forget why we have a Yacht club and  that is to promote the enjoyment of boating

I would like to thank those that worked  so hard to make the 74th installation of  Officers a success. P/C miller did a great  job as installing officer. P/C Morken is a  natural as Officer of the Deck. BM1  Hayes filled the Bosun position perfectly and our friends from Poulsbo were  a great added touch. Also thanks to  Maralee and Rick Ormiston and their  committee for hosting the social hour  prior to the installation. And of course  thanks, to our stewards, Steve Sterns and  Bill Baker for the great setup on the  dock and for serving cake and champagne. And last but not least I would  like to thank our members that stayed  through the ceremony. Your presence  meant a lot to those that were being installed.

We have a lot of new committee chair-  man and it may take us a little lime to hit  our stride. So if we stumble a little at  first, you will hopefully understand. I  feel that Bremerton should have a great  year and will accomplish our stated  goals, given a staff of very capable positive committee members and chairmen.

Now it is time to get on with the business of boating. Summer is here with the warm weather and a great Memorial Day cruise is just a few days away. Hope to see all soon, out on the water. Enjoy your summer and remember the next general meeting is September 17th

Awesome Ospreys

From: Bill Rumbold, Vice Commodore

Where have the past seven months  gone? They say time flies when you are  having fun; it certainly is true in my  case. I have truly enjoyed serving BYC  as your Rear Commodore since last November. Lynne and I have learned a lot  about the club, it's members and have  really enjoyed meeting the officers of  the other Grand XIV yacht clubs. Serving on the bridge affords a great opportunity to meet our members, listen to  your concerns and to be a participant in  trying to resolve problems.

I have found that we do indeed have  members who will step forward to work  for the betterment of our club. This year,  people like Jeff and Al Knudsen took  on the fabrication and installation of the  beautiful new gate at the head of the  ramp. Ray Gorski assumed the role of  Project Manager for the PumpOut Station and has done hours of research,  made numerous phone calls to the  county and has prepared professional-  quality drawings and specifications  which will be submitted to the county  and issued for bid. Ray intends to follow  this project through to completion so  that we are in compliance with state and  county regulations. Mike Leedy and  Bill Streutker were always there when  the club facilities needed maintenance. I  have no idea how many hours these two  have cheerfully performed, but I know if  I asked right now, I could count on them  to do one more job and it would be done.  As busy as Dale Armstrong is with his  own business, he has accepted the task  of Project Manager for the galley repairs  and rehab. With his knowledge and expertise I know it will get done properly.  Barney Shaw and Larry Newton took on the work party management and accomplished a lot  of needed maintenance and repairs. I have received volumes of "free advice", which I truly appreciate; however, those who step forward and say "I'll do that" are a special breed in my book. When you see these guys, stop and tell them thanks for a great job!

To all you new members who were supported in your membership application  by a Committee and said what a great guy you are, what an asset to the club you will be and how you will be an active member, get off your duff and come down to the club and become involved. I guarantee you will enjoy your club so much more.

To you sponsors, remember your recommendation to the E Committee? Get your new member out and involved.

I have enclosed my first cut of the Social Schedule for this coming year and have included the chairman for most of the commit tees. If you want to serve on a committee contact the chairman and I am sure he will be glad for your help. Also,  there are still opportunities to volunteer as chairman. Give me  a call and tell me you want want to chair a committee. If you have ideas for a social or some changes you would like to see, let's talk!

Harry and Paula Davis will host the first Picnic in the Park on Wednesday, 13 June. Theme is American Graffiti 1950's Style. Harry and Paula have a bunch of tricks up their sleeves. Be there  and don't miss the fun!

Finally, Lynne and I want to thank everyone for your support and your confidence, I need it in order to succeed. We also wish everyone a great summer of safe boating and hope to see you out there on the water!

When I retired 3 years ago, I thought I  would kick back, relax and smell the  roses. Well, I'm still looking for the  garden. I can relax somewhat, however, as I know now there is no need  to search for 3 more years. I am looking forward to those years though, as  they hold the promise of exciting  times, friendships and memories not  soon forgotten. I am truly honored to  be able to serve as one of your. officers  and give back for so much that has  been given to Gem and me since we  joined. Thank you for electing me and  giving me this opportunity.

Pride of ownership is a term that will  be appearing in my column from time  to time. What does it mean? Well,  when you joined Bremerton Yacht  Club you became a share holding, voting member. In other words you own  a piece of this club- you bought in!!  As you go about this facility and make  use of the things provided, it means  caring for these things as if they were  yours. It means policing up after using  them so they are ready for the next  "owner", and doing so even if you  find a mess from a "forgetful owner".  It means replacing ice from the ice  locker with not just the required one  for one but why not more than. that to  keep it full like a proud "owner"  would. It means returning dock carts  when you are through so our famous  Cart Boy or you don't have to chase  them down. And when rain is imminent or forecast, tipping them up off  their wheels to keep them dry for the  next user. Cleaning them if you soil  them is another "pride" thing. Not  only are these "pride" items but they're also courtesies to your fellow "owners" the same courtesies you would want them to do for you. So if something needs addressing don't leave it for the next person do it yourself. Set the example.

Finally, if you find a problem or a need and can't remedy it yourself please bring it to the attention of the appropriate "chair" or  to me for resolution.

Bob Backman
Rear Commodore
