The Memorial Day cruise to the outstation was a huge success. P/C miller fed us very well and devised a unique game called Survivor III. I was happy to see that no one was lost in the mud race. I think that a record was set with 44 boats in attendance.

Speaking of our outstation, Pierce County has determined our original use permit should limit attendance to 13 boats at a time. The decision that was rendered from the Hearing Examiner in 1994 did not address a maximum number of boats allowed. A local resident has complained about our use of the outstation on summer holidays. These complaints resulted in the county reviewing our permit and found a maximum number of boats allowed at one time were not specified in the decision. The County then fell back to another regulation to determine a boat use limit. We are going to re-apply to the county and specify a number of boats allowed at one time. The attendance this Memorial was about the most boats that could physically be moored at one time. More information will be provided as the situation develops.

The Annual committee, headed by Mike Thomas, has met several times. They are on a definite quest for pictures. There will also be a pet page and to qualify, your pet must have attended at least one cruise. Good progress so far, with a goal of being published by 1st of October.

Remember the theme for the coming year is to "do your share plus a little" and be positive with comments. Oh and lets not forget why we have a Yacht club and that is to promote the enjoyment of boating. Enjoy the summer and remember the next general meeting is September 17th

Boating season is here once again and, like the migrating birds, BYC boats are leaving for the far north with more yet to follow. From my conversations around the  club, there are still many members that are planning to enjoy the great boating, fishing, and crabbing that is to be found in British Columbia and Alaskan waters. If you are taking an extended cruise or just gunk holing around the local neighborhood, think safety ad be prepared with the proper emergency gear and necessary spare parts. We do not want to lose any members or to learn of any damage to your boat.

For those of you who were unable to attend the first "Picnic in the Park" of the summer you missed a fantastic event! Harry and Paula Davis and the committee he assembled did and outstanding job with the food and the entertainment for his "American Graffiti 1950's Style" party. Vintage cars, off key singing, 1950's trivia games, Burma Shave signs, bubble gum blowing contests and a whole lot more.  Over 110 folks attended! A few of the attendees even looked like they just stepped out of the 50's (albeit a few years older).

If you missed this one, we have another one in planning right now for Wednesday, 18 July. It will be a western BBQ with all the fixins. Al Gonzalez want everyone to get their cowboy  (or girl) hats on their boots  and spurs all polished up for another fun filled evening. Don't miss it!

One of our newest couples to the club, Mike & Abby Dunn, have volunteered to chair the august 15 "Picnic in the Park" and are planning "An old fashioned Picnic". Mike is looking for volunteers to help out. Give him a call. He will appreciate your assistance.

Update your Calendars for the Salmon Bake. I had it scheduled for Sunday, 16 September, but we are going to move earlier to Sunday, 9 September. Norm Smith is the chairman for the Salon Bake and will also need a hardworking committed for this annual event.

The railway has gone through it's annual maintenance program and a new cable and sheave have been installed, new oak tops for the blocks installed, scraped and painted and bunch more thanks to Steve Davies, Jim van Antwerp and crew. It should be ready for another season of full usage.

Lynne and I wish you all a fun filled summer on the water and hope to you all at the picnics.

Summer is finally hear and with it the promise of warmer and drier days. As you make your plans for the summer give some thought to getting your work party time out of the way early. We have  several major projects that we are trying to accomplish before fall. Captain Ray Gorski will be needing help with the plumbing and such on the Pump Out On the Pier (POOP) installation. What a perfect time to help on this job- at this point its all clean work guys, no rubber gloves or respirators needed. Also, for the insatiably curious, now is the time to find out how one of those things really work.

In additions, we should be receiving our final plans for the galley upgrade and modernization. Going in the objectives were to reduce the noise level from the galley, improve space and storage utilization, better traffic flow, and enhanced sanitation. One result, the dish sanitizer will be replaced with a full fledged dishwasher that is more water efficient than the unit it replaces. There will be much to do on the projects throughout the summer. Captain Dale Armstrong will be the project manager and will need carpentry, electrical, and plumbing support for the ripout and installation. Contact him to see where you can fit in.

Captain Terry Stevens is our Work Party Chair for the this year (God bless). He comes equipped with a list of maintenance jobs and a willingness to assign them. We are a big club, your club, and there is always work to be done. See Terry and get your time in now. He's an accommodating guy.

On June 13, Gerri and I took a trip back to the fifties. Captain Harry Davis and Connie Francis (AKA Paula Davis) had such a huge turnout at the Picnic in the Park that they had to bring in additional tables and chairs. Because of this and because some our tables in the park are showing their age, by the July Picnic in the Park we will have 3 additional picnic tables. By the way, great job, Harry, Paula, and crew.

We are in desperate need of your photographs for this year's annual. If your picture is not in the annual, pleas drop one off at the club in the annual Chairman's mailbox or mail it to the club, attention Annual Chair. You may include a picture of your boat if you wish. It is better to send in a photo selected by you, otherwise you may see some "not so flattering picture" of yourself that was taken unexpectedly. OR, even worse, one of the committee members will show up on your doorstep to photograph you!

So, PLEASE, don't let it get to that. Send in a personally selected photo of yourself so we don't have resort to a clandestine operation.

With a little help from our members, we can make this BYC annual "the best ever,"

I'd like to let everyone know what a great committee we have working on this years annual. Thank you guys.

When 8 Isn't Enough

If you're active, 8 glasses of water isn't enough. Even a mild dehydration can make you tire easily, says Susan Kleiner, Ph.D., writing in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

To compute your daily water needs, she suggests multiplying your weight in pounds by 0.8 to determine the number of ounces you should be drinking each day.

It's that time of year when it can get really hot out on the water, so pay attention to your body and drink plenty of fluids, and I mean WATER.
