BYC-POYC NAVIGATION CONTEST
West Sound Easy Pickins'
EASY PICKINS' IN WEST SOUND 2010
The winds couldn't have fooled us more than they did for the West Sound
Easy Pickins' Navigation Contest co-hosted by Bremerton YC and Port
Orchard YC on Saturday, April 24; they brought to mind the term "wind
sandwich". Winds were light and the seas were calm for boats arriving
at BYC on Friday for the start of the weekend's events and they were
even better on departure from POYC on Sunday morning. However, the
in-between part on Saturday during the contest presented the
contestants with southwesterly winds of 15 -25 knots, certainly, more
than enough to disrupt well prepared predictions for the day's contest.
Throttle changes within the allowable +/- 10% range were the order of
the day in an attempt to realize actual elapsed times anywhere near
those predicted.
After Saturday morning log check-in at BYC, 15 contestants from BYC,
Gig Harbor YC, Queen City YC and POYC circumnavigated the 14.2 mile
course starting with the first leg out Port Washington Narrows,
followed by a northerly run up to University Point and returning south
to a finish off the Annapolis waterfront. All contestants continued on
to POYC for log turn-in and the evening awards dinner.
The effect of the wind was certainly apparent in the results with only
one contestant scoring less than 1.0 % error and only three in the 1.0%
to 2.0 % error range of the 15 entrants. Taking Overall honors was
Fred Cole on MOUSETRAP of POYC with an error of 0.9903% followed by
Bill Rumbold aboard SUNDANCE of BYC with 1.1456% error and Jim
VanAntwerp also from BYC on TWERPEDO at 1.2981%. VanAntwerp also won
the Novice trophy. Taking top team honors was the BYC foursome of Bill
Rumbold, Jim VanAntwerp, Rob Bruins and Mike Henry.

BYC RACE TEAM PROVES THAT LOG RACING IS STILL A SOCIAL EVENT (Mike Henry, March 15, 2010)
Six BYC crews ventured over to Meydenbauer Bay (Bellevue) on Lake Washington for MBYC's Boomerang 2010 Navigation Contest. MBYC is a great host and really knows how to
entertain all the contest entrants. You have to be there to appreciate how well they do their entertainment thing consisting of Friday evening hors d'oeurves featuring a
pile of prawns and hot pork loin, followed by a Saturday evening prime rib awards dinner, after dinner dancing to MBYC's own band and a full Sunday morning breakfast.
A total of 37 contestants ran the 21 mile course around Mercer Island and the middle of the lake. And the contest results showed the BYC Team was HOT!!! We swept all
the trophies in Class 1 with the crew of Capts Steve and Deana Brett aboard PRINCESS MOKIHANA taking first in class with score of 1.5006% error followed by Capts Owen
and Linda Ritter on OUTBOUND in second place with 1.6157% and Capts Gene and Martha Paxton on EVENTIDE rounding out the Class 1 trophy grab by taking third place with
1.9263%. Capt Chuck Silvernail aboard SOLMAR trophied in second place in Class 2 with an error of 1.1849%. P/C Bill and Lynn Rumbold finished just out of trophy
territory in Class 3. P/C Mike and Billie Henry on PEACHY KEEN finally got something right for a change and managed to squeeze into Second Place Overall with a score of
0.7164% error. CONGRATULATIONS BYC LOGGERS!
This e-mail is being sent to you to encourage your personal
participation in this years heavy weather race. Our Club has a
long-standing tradition of being a front runner with this event. This
year, Maydenbower Yacht Club has made it known that they intend to
become leaders with log racing and they are aiming directly at us. If
you are able to race (and it's easy, mostly because its all about
socializing) or if you know of fellow BYC members that could race
please do so or encourage them. If you have already signed up for the
log race, thank you. You can get all the particulars about the race at
the clubhouse. In addition there will be "skull sessions" that will
greatly assist you at the clubhouse next week. See our website for
dates and times.
