USCG "Eyes On The Sound"
Program
USCG Group Seattle Eyes on the Sound Program Info
The Eyes on the Sound program uses pre-identified volunteers living
on or near the waters of Puget Sound to assist operations watchstanders
in the successful prosecution of search and rescue cases. Volunteers
would assist Group Seattle Operation's watchstanders by being available
to observe from their residence, or travel to an area of an actual or possible
distress taking place, and report your findings directly to the watchstander.
Ideally, the volunteers would be available 24 hours a day, and would
have access to a cellular phone and binoculars. The Puget Sound area
has limited search and rescue resources and the efforts of these volunteers
would greatly assist Group Seattle watchstanders with determining if a
resource is needed.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer to support this innovative
program, please fill out an application and mail it to:

Letter from Coast Guard Auxiliary
Dear Sir or Madam,
A new Seattle Coast Guard initiative, called "Eyes on the Sound", is
soliciting assistance from the public living near the water who can visually
assist the U.S. Coast Guard with Search and Rescue (SAR). Currently,
a dedicated group of over fifty local volunteers is working with the USCG
and Coast Guard Auxiliary to improve the safety of mariners in Puget Sound
by keeping an eye on the sound. In order to continue the growth of
membership, we are requesting your assistance in the distribution of the
attached USCG Group Seattle "Eyes on the Sound" program description sheet,
and volunteer application form to any of your members and/or friends who
live near the waters of Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and surrounding waters.
From 1 Oct 2000 to 17 Apr 2001, the USCG in the Puget Sound Area has
saved 22 lives, conducted 407 Search & Rescue missions, and 452 Safety
boardings. The continuing growth in boating on local waters has increased
the need for programs like "Eyes on the Sound." With the assistance of
dedicated volunteers in the "Eyes on the Sound" program, we believe that
more lives can be saved, and our SAR missions will be greatly aided as
a result of this unique partnership.
For more information and application forms, visit the Eyes
On The Sound Web page or call the Eyes on the Sound Hotline at 206-217-6565.
If you require more information or additional forms mailed, faxed or e-mailed
to you please contact LTJG Jeff Engel at
jengel@pacnorwest.uscg.mil
or Robert Lyden, USCG Auxiliary,
rlyden@pacnorwest.uscg.mil.
Sincerely,
ROBERT LYDEN
U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
