CROSSING THE BAR

We have learned that P/C Carl Wilhelm (BYC's Commodore in 1960) passed away on Monday, 13 January 2003. A memorial event is planned at the Clubhouse (see below). Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. From: Bill Rumbold, Commodore

The Bremerton Yacht Club has lost one of its most esteemed members. Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm passed away on Monday, 13 January. Carl in his quiet unassuming manner has had a tremendous impact on boating here in the Puget Sound area. Not only was he the Commodore of BYC in 1960, having joined fifty years ago, but Carl was also an active long time member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron, teaching classes in boating with his sidekick, Jack Hensley. He has remained involved in all the club's activities throughout the years and has been an avid predicted log racer for many years. When Special Peoples Cruise needed boats, he and SEA NYMPH were always available to take a group out and he enjoyed it as much as his passengers did. Social functions would always find him and Gerry in attendance. I could always depend on seeing Carl at all the general membership meetings sitting in the back making sure the bridge was taking care of his club. I guess that is one of the things I admired about Carl, he was dependable. He always had a kind word for everyone and was always ready to participate. I know that many members of BYC, both old and new, will find a tremendous void in their yacht club lives without Carl. I know I shall. I will miss him - a lot.

We will be conducting a Memorial Service to honor and to recognize the services of Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm on Saturday, 1 February at 1400 in the club main hall. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron have also expressed a desire to participate and will be in attendance. There will be more information posted in the club as plans are finalized.

One of Carl's favorite pastimes was participating in the Heavy Weather predicted log race and this will be the first in many years that he has not been a participant. I am sure he will be "Up There" watching over the race and cheering the BYC team on to victory. [from the Commodore's February Towline Report]

From: Bob Bachman, Vice Commodore

Monday, January 13th, Bremerton Yacht Club lost an elder statesman. Long time member, Past Commodore Carl Wilhelm crossed the bar. Carl loved boating and was very active in his club and several other boating organizations up until just weeks ago. Quiet and soft spoken, Carl will be missed. Gerri and I send our sympathies to his wife Gerry and his family in this sad time. [from the Vice Commodore's February Towline Report]

Capt. James R. "Bob" Crippen, a member of BYC since 1974, passed away on November 20th. He had been suffering from asbestosis. He leaves a son, a daughter, a sister, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. A memorial donation will be made to Hospice of Kitsap County on his behalf. Our prayers are with his family.

Thank you,
Dave Cleator, Chaplain eeyore@silverlink.net

News and Events

OPENING DAY IS MAY 3, 2003. THE THEME IS “OFF TO THE RACES.”

Commodore Bill Rumbold asked that I coordinate the BYC entries for this year’s Opening Day in Seattle. With that assignment, I’m announcing that the search is now on for volunteers willing to participate in the biggest Social Event in the boating world in the Pacific Northwest. Volunteers willing to demonstrate the BYC Spirit and show off their boats are needed to enter the Opening Day Parade. In addition to skippers and their boats, we need a good showing of crewpersons, as well.

Each parade entry is grouped in a category of your own choosing. While there are many categories from which to choose, the following are probably the likeliest choices for our entries: Decorated Power or Sail, Dressed Power or Sail, Club Officers Salute, Novelty Decorated, Classic Power or Sail and Spirit Class. Opening Day is a major event each year and BYC’s image is certainly enhanced by a good showing of club entries in the parade. While my primary involvement is in gathering boats, I have no doubt that your Fleet Captain will be putting on a terrific social agenda for all participating BYC members.

Want to know more about Opening Day? Think you might be interested in entering your boat? Want to be a crewperson? Give me a call at 360-377-6639 or a type at mahenry@tscnet.com.
Right now is not too soon to sign up.

SPECIAL PEOPLE CRUISE: DECEMBER 1, 2002

Yes, it’s time to prepare for this wonderful event…

The Official Special People Flyer
Again this year, Skipperettes are providing the baked potato bar with the trimmings, french bread, and beverages. BYC members are to bring large salads or desserts for the dinner.

The dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. after all of the vessels have returned from taking the Special People on a cruise to wave and talk to Santa via the VHF.

Dinner will be served to all participating yacht club members and their guests, volunteers, helpers, US Navy personnel, and other guests.

We can serve as many as 170-180 people and if you have ever raised boys, you know how they can eat. The Bremerton High School Basketball Players are wonderful with assisting the Special People and we couldn’t do this event without them.

Skipperettes, we need your help in the kitchen and serving. Please call our Hostess Marva McWaid (479-5496) and let her know that you would like to help. (Mike Leedy)

Dinghy Dock

We are requesting that all boats be removed from the
dinghy dock no later than 12 July 2002.
This will make room for the sailing dinghies for our
two-week class and some much-needed repairs to the dock.

Please pass this on to any other BYC members.
I'd also appreciate help in identifying the owners
of the boats (some appear to have established
residency at the dock).

Thanks!

USCG "Eyes On The Sound" Program

USCG Group Seattle Eyes on the Sound Program Info

The Eyes on the Sound program uses pre-identified volunteers living on or near the waters of Puget Sound to assist operations watchstanders in the successful prosecution of search and rescue cases.  Volunteers would assist Group Seattle Operation's watchstanders by being available to observe from their residence, or travel to an area of an actual or possible distress taking place, and report your findings directly to the watchstander.

Ideally, the volunteers would be available 24 hours a day, and would have access to a cellular phone and binoculars.  The Puget Sound area has limited search and rescue resources and the efforts of these volunteers would greatly assist Group Seattle watchstanders with determining if a resource is needed.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer to support this innovative program, please fill out an application and mail it to:

    Letter from Coast Guard Auxiliary

    Dear Sir or Madam,

A new Seattle Coast Guard initiative, called "Eyes on the Sound", is soliciting assistance from the public living near the water who can visually assist the U.S. Coast Guard with Search and Rescue (SAR).  Currently, a dedicated group of over fifty local volunteers is working with the USCG and Coast Guard Auxiliary to improve the safety of mariners in Puget Sound by keeping an eye on the sound.  In order to continue the growth of membership, we are requesting your assistance in the distribution of the attached USCG Group Seattle "Eyes on the Sound" program description sheet, and volunteer application form to any of your members and/or friends who live near the waters of Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and surrounding waters.

From 1 Oct 2000 to 17 Apr 2001, the USCG in the Puget Sound Area has saved 22 lives, conducted 407 Search & Rescue missions, and 452 Safety boardings.  The continuing growth in boating on local waters has increased the need for programs like "Eyes on the Sound." With the assistance of dedicated volunteers in the "Eyes on the Sound" program, we believe that more lives can be saved, and our SAR missions will be greatly aided as a result of this unique partnership.

For more information and application forms, visit the Eyes On The Sound Web page or call the Eyes on the Sound Hotline at 206-217-6565. If you require more information or additional forms mailed, faxed or e-mailed to you please contact LTJG Jeff Engel at jengel@pacnorwest.uscg.mil or Robert Lyden, USCG Auxiliary, rlyden@pacnorwest.uscg.mil.

    Sincerely,
    ROBERT LYDEN
