We returned from the Nordic Tugs Rendezvous in time for the QCYC/BYC Big Brother Cruise-In scheduled for June 26-27, only to find out that it was cancelled due to lack of participation on the part of both BYC and QCYC. What a disappointment. In talking to my counterpart at QCYC, we both feel this is a traditional event that we need to keep going. Unfortunately, there were other commitments our and their members had that precluded enough attendance to support the event this year. If you have any ideas on how to light the "participation spark" for next year, please let me know.
As I write this column, the July Picnic in the Park is one week away. I'm sure it too will be a resounding success, thanks to the efforts of Capt. Andy and First Mate Nancy Cupp, BYC members for just three months. Way to go, Andy and Nancy. It's wonderful to see new members getting involved right away. I encourage all newer members to take Andy's and Nancy's lead and jump in, the water's just fine. You'll get to know other members and have fun too.
The annual BYC Fishing Derby sponsored by Capt. Bret Halffman and First Mate Lynetta is on August 1st. Check out the flyer at the club, and the one in this issue of the Towline (or visit this other Web site). Letters have been sent to many sponsors, and we're hoping for many good prizes again this year.. Let's hope the fish cooperate with us. (Capt. Barney says there will be good fishing!)
For those of you who may be non-fishers but want to take your boat out for the day, the Port of Bremerton has invited BYC members to bring their boats to the BREMERTON HARBORSIDE Community Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday, August 1st from noon to 1930 at the Bremerton Marina. The US Navy Band will be providing the music, there will be hamburgers, hotdogs, corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, dessert booths, art activities for children, free rides on the foot ferry and tours of the new conference center.
The following weekend, August 6-8, BYC will be hosting the Bridge Officers of the Grand Fourteen Yacht Clubs. If you'll be away for the weekend, please let the R/C and/or Float Chairman, P/C Gary Carr, know if your slip can be used by our visitors. We expect approximately 35 boats, so any slips available would be most appreciated. One third of the boats will be arriving on Friday afternoon, with the remaining two-thirds coming mid day on Saturday.

On August 20-22, BYC will host the Past Commodores Cruise-In (pdf). Again, if your slip is available, please let Ex-Commodore Bachman know so it can be used by our visitors.
Last but not least, is the annual Labor Day Weekend Club Cruise to Oro Bay, September 3rd - 6th. Watch for the flyer and sign-up sheet in the Club Lounge. The theme for the Anderson Island Parade this year is "Cartoon Characters". Our Fleet Captain, Steve Stearns and First Mate Laurie will have a tough time topping their Memorial Day Cruise, but I know they're up to the task.
While Labor Day may be the "official" end of summer, we all know that the Northwest has many more weeks of wonderful weather. So mark your calendars and don't fail to attend the annual Salmon Bake on Sunday, September 12th. Capt. Bob Stanberry and First Mate Stephanie Marone are chairing the event again this year, so you know it will be wonderful. Watch for the sign-up sheet. Hope to see you at these club events, as well as out on the water.
