From the Bridge

A Note from the Commodore

May brings our leadership Change of Watch (May 18th). Executive Committee Chairman Bill Harris, 2nd Year Chair Brian Dahl, 3rd Year Planning Chair PC Mike Henry, and 3rd Year Budget Chair PC Leo Longenecker, as well as Secretary Bill Karwacki and Treasurers Donna Park and Anita Albright, deserve many thanks for their exemplary service and congratulations for keeping the Club in great shape, both physically and fiscally. I am pleased also to know that our Bridge Officers and Executive Officers moving forward in their positions, along with the slate of nominees for the entry positions, will continue to provide strong and sound leadership.

While the leadership of our club is important, our strongest asset continues to be our volunteers and participants. This is a club that relies exclusively on your volunteer efforts to conduct its business and social functions and maintain the most complete yacht club facilities in the area. And when we get together to have fun, you're there with bells on. It is to each of you that I express my sincere thanks for stepping forward, accepting positions of leadership, doing the work that needs to be done, and contributing to the camaraderie that makes BYC a great place for boaters to enjoy the boating life.

Serving on your Bridge for the past three years has been an incredibly rewarding experience that has truly enriched both Nina's and my life. The experience of leading such a fine group of people is one from which we have many fond memories.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Commodore.

With warm personal regards,

John Burwell

Daffodil- What a fabulous weekend we had for the Daffodil Marine Parade weekend. We made our own sunshine and had a radiant weekend as we came home with five awards: Spirit Award for the Trivia Contest, 2nd place Theme Boat, the Mayors's Choice Award, the Princess's Choice award and finally the Commodores Perpetual Trophy Award. We rocked it, literally. The dancing bees and flowering blooms won the day.

Awards Ceremony-Congratulations to all those that received special recognition for their contributions throughout this past year at the Awards Ceremony Friday April 27. All are very deserving. As the Commodore so aptly put it, it is the members that make this club work the way it does.

Off the Bow

May kicks off a busy summer. With Opening Day leading the parade of events, we are looking for a well-attended Opening Day Event at Seattle and Queen City Yacht Clubs, May 4 - 7. The schedule is busy with a lot of BYC events to supplement the already busy Opening Day schedule.

Probably the most important General Meeting of the year is Monday May 7 where the election of new officers and the approval of next years' budget takes place. Be sure to attend and participate in these important decisions.

The last formal work party of the year is scheduled for Sat May 12. All work party hours must be accomplished by June 1. If work party obligation is not satisfied at this final work party, special arrangements to do work party time must be made with the Work Party Chair, Robert Grice.

The installation of Officers takes place Fri, May 18th and all club members are invited. A social hour starts at 6PM with appetizers served. The Ceremony begins at 7PM and concludes with cake and champagne. Post ceremony activities continue with visiting on the Bridge Officer's boats in reciprocal moorage between A & B string.

The Memorial Day Cruise to Oro Bay - FRI 5/25 to MON 5/28 wraps up the busy Month of May. Tom & Hillary Obenchain, the new Fleet Captains have been busily planning this weekend and I am quite sure their first hurrah will be a great one, Sign up early!

June events include the Commodore Ball, arguably the best social event of the year, rivaled only by the Christmas Dinner. This will be a grand event honoring the outgoing Commodore, John Burwell and his First Mate, Nina. Plan to attend and help us wrap up the Burwell's three years in style and honor them in a memorable way.

Other June events:

B-string Party- SUN June 3

Parking Lot Sale- SAT 6/16

Picnic in the Park- WED 6/20

Big Brother Cruise- FRI 6/22- SUN 6/24- an event not to be missed!
