Reports from the Bridge

May 2017

You can get a pretty good sense from the Commodore’s and Rear Commodore’s articles and all the flyers in this month’s towline that there are lots of fun events between now and the summer cruising season.  It has been a long, wet, cold winter, and it is nice to finally turn our attentions to the promise of better weather and setting sail, whether for short weekends or the magical long cruises.  The many club cruising events can help you complete your shake downs and be ready to go!

There are a couple of items I would like to call attention to.  We will have a New Members Social on Friday, 28 April.  This will be the first New Members gathering we have had since August 2015 and we have had a lot of new members come in over that time frame.  Many of these new members have already been very active in many club events and are familiar faces.  I hope you will take the opportunity to drop in and help us continue the welcoming process and ensure all are acquainted with the many talented people and club resources available to them.

I don’t know how many have noticed, but Trawler Fest, traditionally held in Anacortes, will be held at the Bremerton Marina and Conference Center this May.  They have a good number of seminars, ranging from diesel engine repair to favorite cruising venues, and you can’t beat the commute!  Check it out at http://www.passagemaker.com/events/trawlerfest-bremerton-wa-2017/.

Finally, I would like to thank Past Commodore Mike Murray for developing a fine slate of candidates for each of our elected positions.  These nominations will be presented at our 3 April business meeting before we open the floor for additional nominations.  Mike personally talked to many members to find those with the right skills and, just as importantly, the willingness to commit the time necessary to fulfill these roles.  Between the nominations and election, as well as the review and approval of the budget, the next three meetings are key meetings each year to set the future course of BYC.  I hope we will see you there.

Vice Commodore John Burwell
