Last year at this time when the summer season was getting underway I was busily trying to get a handle on the First Year E-Committee Chair responsibilities and day-to-day business of the club. Well, here I am, a year later and the situation has certainly changed. No longer looking to serve as the 2nd year chair, I find myself the newly elected Rear Commodore. The decision to go through the Bridge chairs, and in doing so, disrupting the general flow of things in the E-committee was not an easy thing to do. I had committed to the three-year progression of the E-committee and enjoyed working with Bill Harris, Jim Van Antwerp and the rest of the E-committee. I was learning a lot and liked it. But after being approached and following multiple conversations with the current bridge officers and several Past Commodores over many weeks, I agreed. I do want to thank Bill Harris, who volunteered to fill the hole created in the E-committee chairs by this decision. His willingness to step back into the middle of things after completing three years on the E-committee cannot go unrecognized. It takes an enormous amount of selfless dedication to commit to five continuous years in the E-committee chairs. His willingness to serve allowed me to be more comfortable with agreeing to move to the Bridge. Susan and I are certainly looking forward to this coming year and the ones to follow. I look forward to serving the club in this capacity.
Summer is here! Boating season is upon us…and the Picnic-in-the-Park series is kicking off Wednesday June 15th. In the past, this first event has been a hamburger and hot dog affair but the menu for this year has not been set at press time. Two of our very new members, Richard and Carrie Haney, are co-chairing the event and I am looking forward to seeing what kind of culinary delight they plan for us. Be sure to sign up in the clubhouse.
The July picnic is set for Wednesday July 20th and will be chaired by Jan Cordodor. More details on that event will be coming. The Annual Pig Roast, chaired by P/C Don Park is tentatively planned for Sunday August 21st. I am not sure why that is tentative but we will pass the word as soon as we confirm the plans.
This past year, participation at the summer picnics grew every event. It was fun to see everyone enjoying the park, the food, and the company. The general consensus is that the best part was watching the younger family members. The children, parents and grandparents at these events added an energy level that was infectious. I am looking forward to doing it again this summer.
I want to thank the BYC membership for the display of confidence in me by my election as Rear Commodore. I look forward to the experience, challenges, and good times. I am glad to be here. I like this place.
— Phil LeBas, Rear Commodore
"When I think of a shipmate, I think of that Sailor who works side by side with you every day. It's that Sailor who shares the rough times, as well as the good times. It's that Sailor who goes to general quarters and battle stations with you when tragedy strikes; and that same Sailor that you will entrust with your life. True shipmates are those Sailors with whom you make lifetime friendships that can never be compared to anything…’
