Reports from the Bridge

Jul 2013

Fear is experienced not in doing something but in making the decision to do something.

It has been a long time since I've been to an event at the Club that Paula Lewis hasn't had a hand in. From every General Membership and E-Committee meeting as the Secretary to every Club Cruise as the Fleet Captain; to volunteering for galley duty either as Chair of the Installation of Officers Ceremony or as a Galley Hand for too many events to list here. I am hopeful we will be able to attract more Members like Paula… those who are fortunate enough to not only have her energy and talent but also the same dedication to the Club that allows the Club to directly benefit from that energy and talent. Thank you Paula, for all you have done and all you continue to do.

On the evening of June 5, 2013, Crystal and I had the privilege of attending the Installation of Officers for the Bremerton Yacht Club's Skipperettes. For those of you unable to attend the event, I want to let you know you missed an evening that included table settings befitting a 5 star restaurant, a dinner that would send most 5 star restaurant chefs back to culinary school to be able to compete with what was served and the company of the most talented and dedicated Members of the Bremerton Yacht Club. The Installation Ceremony itself was efficient, yet entertaining, and provided a great opportunity to get to know the “ladies that lead the ladies" that make our Club the outstanding organization it is. On behalf of the entire Bremerton Yacht Club, thank you ladies, aka Skipperettes!

On Saturday, the 8th of June, Crystal and I attended our Commodore's Ball honoring Ex-Commodore Rob Bruins. Much has already been said about what a gentleman Rob is and the dedication and commitment he has to our Club. It was heartwarming to hear his 13 Counterparts in the Grand 14 all recognize his like contributions to their organization as well. The evening could not have been more elegant or better managed. The Commodore's Ball committee, Chaired by Stacy Longenecker, provided decorations, dinner and entertainment traditionally enjoyed only at upscale, big city venues. The efforts of all those Club members involved not only honored Rob but also demonstrated to our Yacht Club friends from around Puget Sound the dedication, commitment and talent of our Members.

As you enjoy summer on your boat with your boating friends, please be sure to invite your non-member friends to join you at the Club for the "New and Prospective Members' Night" on Saturday, September 28, 2013. They will be guests of the Club for both the party and one night's moorage. Stay tuned for additional details from our Social Chairs Brett and Lynetta Halffman.

This will be the first year we offer our Movies in the Park nights and I want to invite you all to bring your favorite chairs, blankets, microwave popcorn and beverages to share an “evening at the Cinema" in our very own picnic shelter. We have installed a 94" projection screen and will use the Club's Boxlight projector to show popular movies and/or concerts. The schedule for the Movies in the Park includes Friday nights July 26 and September 13 and Saturday nights June 29 and August 17. Start times will be 8:30 (2030). We hope to see you there!

In my June article, I introduced the concept of the "Cruising Pod" and asked that you email us at the email address that was provided if you are interested in joining this informal group of likeminded Club members. To date, we have received a limited response. Given the somewhat less than enthusiastic response to the idea, if we do not receive a warmer reception as measured by the emails sent to , we will be putting that idea squarely on the back burner!

With warm personal regards,
Ray Norton
