Reports from the Bridge

Apr 2013

March was quite a busy month. A number of us made the trek to Tacoma Yacht Club to enjoy a very informative presentation on the upcoming America’s Cup competition. Our Regatta for Sail Chairman, Jay Spearman, sponsored a couple of seminars on “Pre-Cruise Maintenance” and “Rafting” here at BYC. Bev and I attended Commodore Balls at Rainier, Edmonds and Everett Yacht Clubs. Our Fleet Captain, Paula Lewis, put together a fun “Leapin Leprechauns” weekend cruise to Kingston. We had our annual dinner meeting combined with a visit and presentation by the Seattle Yacht Club Trio on the upcoming “Opening Day”. Throw in a bunch of the kinds of meetings it takes to keep BYC running, like the Marina Investment, Clubhouse Remodel, Nominating, Planning and Budget Committees. And the month would close with the annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt.

As usual, I/We have so many people to thank for keeping BYC a fun club to belong to. Jay Spearman has done an outstanding job of helping to expand our boating knowledge by scheduling and presenting seminars so that we are ready for the upcoming boating season. It is truly unfortunate that more of our members are not taking advantage of these learning opportunities, Thank you Jay and Dale Fransen for the March seminars. The “Leapin Leprechauns” cruise to Kingston was again a way to get to know our members as we boat hopped from boat to boat each day to enjoy each others company. Thanks again to Paula Lewis for planning the fun weekend and to all those that helped out through out the weekend. This year’s annual corned beef and cabbage dinner had to be one of Al and Joanne Gonzalez’s best efforts yet! Thanks go out to Al and Joanne, event chair, Paula Lewis, and the entire committee for making the dinner one the Seattle Yacht Club Trio and our BYC members will long remember.

April will be another busy month. You won’t want to miss the seminars on anchoring or taking advantage of reciprocal moorage. Our spring work party will be April 13 & 14. The Daffodil Festival at Tacoma Yacht Club promises to be entertaining as the visiting Commodores will be hypnotized on Friday night and our own R/C Norton will represent us in the Marine Trivia game on Saturday. Our BYC racers will be active with the BYC/POYC “Easy Pickin’s” for the power boats and the “Calvert Cup” for our sail racers. Bev and I will continue our tour of Grand 14 clubs as we attend Commodore Balls at Day Island and Poulsbo. You can keep track of all that is happening at BYC by checking in on the website and clicking on “Events” and then “Event Calendar”. Remember too, that we will start the nominations for elected offices this month. All this and there is also our preparation for Opening Day.

We have a number of By-Law and Regulation changes being considered. Please take the time to acquaint your with these proposals so that we can have educated discussions prior to any votes. We also have some tough financial decisions to make in the near future and it is imperative that discussions be made with an open mind and actually listen to the answers when a question is asked from all sides.

I can not thank all the club members enough for all the support you have given us in this journey through the chairs. And Bev deserves so much credit for all she does behind the scenes to support this club and its members, thank you.

See you around the club,
Rob Bruins
